What's on your workbench - June 2020
A new month with new projects. Let's see what you have!
My latest: A Westerfield ATSF Bx-13 boxcar with some additional wood weathering to go. With the virus and social plans on hold for the summer, it's a great time to build out all of your kits collecting dust!
Gas or Oil Lighting
So I'd been on and off working on lighting on my layout, using mainly LEDs. But I wanted an effect of an era that was just moving from gas or oil lighting into electric. Around last Christmas the wife had some of those little battery operated tea lights set up as decoration. I was watching one flicker and thought this could be a possible solution.
Compressor Selection
Good morning.
Not having done any airbrushing since the last century when Floquil held sway, I will again soon enter into the painting fray, including a new brush for acrylics and compressor, as well.
Believe I have the new brush selection finalized but am undecided as to the compressor, other than I do wish for as quiet of a compressor as is reasonably (thinking $$) available and with a tank or tanks to minimize constant compressor use and noise.
Installing Windows
I was very fortunate to be able to remove the window frames from my used roundhouse,...without damaging them. I'm not sure how they were originally put in, but it appeared to be just some sort of minimal tacking method.
So now I am looking for advice on the best way to re-install them once I finishing painting the interior walls, etc?
What is your experience packing structures for moving?
In anticipation of a move, I am looking at packing a number of structures. I hope people will share their experiences both good and bad. (It is always good to know what doesn't work!)
Packing rolling stock is relatively easy, especially if you have original boxes.
I'm about to find out if my sectional layout construction (almost TOMA) works for moving.

Tips and techniques.
Do we have a thread sharing tips and techniques we all discover while modeling. If we do, please point me to it. If not, maybe we could start one.
Testors Dullcote vs Krylon color max clear FLAT not MATTE
I know that there has been much mentioned of this But I am not sure Krylon Colormaxx clear "FLAT KRYSTAL CLEAR" was mentioned, (non yellowing by the way) I recall the "Matte" Krylon being mentioned in thread as " as closest to Testors"...……....HOWEVER today I purchased 11oz of the Krylon Flat at Lowes...$3.98 (11 oz) just for the heck of it.
Base Colors to Enhance Primary Colors
I have wondered about this for a while, and a comment in another thread sparks re-interest. When painting, which base colors bring out the best of the primary color? Other than black, gray or white, what works better with certain colors? As stated in another thread, a silver base seems to bring out the best in yellow, I also heard that silver is a good base for red.
This isn't about the application process (brush/airbrush/roller), or thinning or acrylics/enamels/lacquers.

Shapeways smooth fine plastic detail removal
I believe have found the correct size Shapeways reefer unit. The problem is the rear door latches and details need to be removed. I will use a decal from a photo to replace the details of the door. Can the printed 3d latch details be removed easily, like box car details?
