Detroit Windsor Connecting Railroad Virtual Video Tour

Hello Everyone, here is a video tour of The Detroit Windsor Connecting Railroad.  I have been working on this layout for a few years now.   The layout is in my basement approximately 24 by 30 feet.  It is 1/29th scale G gauge.  Take a look and I'll be posting more specifics in future about the different areas I am working on.

Dominos Sugar plant operations, Baltimore, MD

In another thread about Salt operations there was this mention, but I didn't want cloud that thread with my response.

Did you hear about the fire that destroyed (?) the historic Domino Sugar company plant right on the Baltimore harbor? There were some overhead pictures but I didn't see any rails. I was wondering if any sugar was ever shipped in and out of there by hopper.

DCC and the Bachmann 3-truck Shay

I have acquired a Bachmann 80-ton 3-truck Shay. I will be putting a simple SoundTraxx MC1 non-sound decoder in it - it has an 8-pin socket.

I note from the exploded parts diagram that there is a cab light in the locomotive (or maybe, hopefully, it's a firebox light). What I haven't found is what function/aux it is connected to. I could do the trial and error method, but if anyone already knows?

Tight turns

How tight of a real life turn is still workable?

I have no idea how to calculate what radius turn this would be when converted to various model railroad scales, but it looks more severe than an 18" in HO.

The Google image is along the mainline of the Stillwater Central Railroad near Wheatland, OK, now a WATCO shortline. The turnout leads to a few rail served small industries to the north, and some of the spurs to those leave at a 90 degree angle. Tank cars, boxcars, covered hoppers, and lumber racks make a weekly appearance.

Primer Question

Hi folks,

I have three unpainted ballast cars from Bowser, should I hit them with primer before I paint them with Vallejo Model Air??

Thanks, Scott

Milling Loco Weights for Decoder Space

I'm sure we've all been there - having to get more space inside our loco shells to accommodate DCC decoders, or in my case RailPro receivers. Usually I've had to take a hacksaw, or port-a-band saw, to those white-metal weights to cut off some height to gain the space needed. Not a fun or easy process. Fortunately I've got a connection to someone with a CNC mill. The pictures & video are posted below.

prototypical question

How prototypical was a factory fresh modernized 40 foot box car, (no roof walks shorter ladders) ..Im not referring to an old owned railroad  company modified box car but a fresh out of the factory forty footer no roof walk etc?

Chessie System Vermillion

Hi, I am modeling Chessie Systems Locomotives. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get Vermillion colored decal sheets so I can cut my own width of stripes. I prefer waterslide not stickers. I would even consider paint (not air spray) Thank you for your time.

Track Work...

Time to fix a long overdue track elevation issue that has been affecting operations since the beginning...

  Both tracks out of service...
