Unboxing Surprise with the Walthers Modern Grocery Warehouse
I bought a Walthers Kit for a kitbash project and it was not what I expected. Kudos Walthers!!!!
Proto 2000 2-8-2 Parts
I recently purchased a Proto 2000 2-8-8-2 off of eBay. It has some issues with broken and missing parts in the running gear. Does anyone know of a source for parts outside of Walthers? I contacted Walthers and while they do have parts, not the parts that I need.
Locomotive movement from rest
This topic is related to one I started yesterday about sound decoders, but I set it up separately in prototype discussion in case not too many people are interested in endlessly tweaking sound decoders.
The baseline question is can diesel electric locomotives move away from rest without changing the prime mover from idle?
Sound Decoder Competition
Is there anyone out there besides me doing decoder competition/comparisons on their own railroad?
Procor Tank Cars
Re: Procor "GP20" tank cars. "Current non-pressure (general service) tank cars, contrary to the comments concerning Rapido's models, do not have "domes" --- a "dome" on obsolete tank cars is correctly called an "expansion dome". Today, what are incorrectly called "domes" on pressure and non-pressure (not "low-pressure) are "protective housings". Google "Field Guide for Tank Cars" --- it gives the true terminology for tank cars (which are not "tankers" or "tanker cars&quo
What curve radius do I use?
I have a dilemma:
I am designing my future 3'x6'(ish) HO Scale layout. The size is fixed, and I will be using Kato sectional track.
WHAT CURVE RADIUS SHOULD I USE?
The widest radius I can use is 17" (image shown below). It would allow me to run most standard 40 and 50' freight cars, and most 4 axle diesels. However, there would be no scenery in front of the track, because the edge of the ballast butts up to the edge of the layout. (Lexan would be used as a guardrail)

Backdrop on a Small Layout
Need some advice here.
Current state of the build is in the photo below. I want to put a partial length backdrop right behind the ridge. (There may or may not be additional "wing" backdrops behind the cuts on the two ends.)
I have 12" wide hardboard so I will use hardboard. (I know there are a hundred other products I could use, but I'm going to use what I have.)
Proto 2K SW9: 15" Radius friendly?
Will a Proto 2000 SW9 negotiate a 15" radius curve without modification?
Is it "15 inch radius friendly" so to speak?
Tools, tips and tricks
I have found that a very good cleaning fluid for my airbrush, available at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and art supplies lick Dick Blick. It is a "Brush Restorer and Conditioner". It's main use is to restore unusable brushes with dried paint. Although a bit pricey, it has no odor and will work with both acrylic AND solvent based paints. I first run clean thinner appropriate to the paint and finish with the "Conditioner" that works exceptionally well to dislodge pesky dried acrylic residue.
Athearn ALCO PA/PB rebuild x 5
Well, I'm at it again. My light build and 250T darrick is on hold waiting on parts, so on to the next.
I bought 3 Athearn Alco PA-1 locomotives and 2 PA B units so I can make a A-B-B-A with a reserve A unit. All are powered.
I started the project by disassembling all the parts and starting on the frames. I deburred the frame castings, rounded off edges and sand blasted with F100. I did the same with the trucks and each wheel - without hitting spindles.
