Custom Model from a 70's MR Article

I am currently working on a project that is a wee bit out of the ordinary for me. But as it turns out, right up my alley.

Recently one of my Patrons contacted me about building a diorama scene for them. Thing is the project hailed from a long and drawn out process.

For Todd, it started with a Showcase miniatures kit
For me, it was all about that article.

PECO Electrofrog double-slip turnout wiring and diode-matrix control?

This is a bit of a "dummy check" question to make sure I understand how these work. It has four wiring connections, when held horizontally, one at each end for the "main frogs" and one on each side for the "side frogs". The frogs on each end are wired to the switch machine contacts (or Frog Juicer) on the opposite end, the side frogs don't change polarity so just go to the track bus wires?

Motorizing sector plate - circuit needed

I have a 2-position sector plate in the HO micro layout I am building (loosely based on the Box St. Yard plan). I would like to automate this - something like two buttons on the control panel - push one and it goes to one side and stops, push the other and it swings back again. The actual motorization seems easy enough, just need a slow speed-high torque motor to swing an arm to push and pull it just like the current manual lever, with a couple of lever-style micro switches to tell it to stop at each end. It only moves an inch or so.

Railway Engineering Co

I recently had occasion to order from Railway Engineering.  I've bought from them before and been pleased with the products.  This time there was a problem with the order and when I brought it up with the vendor with a polite email I received a response that was erroneous, vulgar, and insulting.

There could be two or three reasons for the vendors outrageous response, but the end result is I won't buy from him any more.  I'm posting this so others will know to be cautious.

Help Weathering a coaling tower

Below are two photos.  The first is of a model of a tower I have made and the second of the prototype.  I am trying to weather the model following the proto photo.

Models or Modeling?

After reading the several replies to my original question I reworded the question as follows.

Which of the following to you gain the most fun and satisfaction:
1. Building the models?
2. Collecting models?
3. Operating the models?

I would like to read your answers and explanations.

Querying space between tracks in small yard..  photo below is what I planned but compared to the 2nd photo I seem to have to put the tracks closer. what would be best practice here.

Soldering station for DCC installation?

I have a good many decoders to hardwire into NIB but pre-dcc era N scale diesels. A soldering station purchase seems like a good idea.

Just now fished around online for a Weller WTCPT, but not sure if it is the best for the installation work or if a less expensive station by another manufacturer is just as capable.

Much appreciate advice.
