Modeling topic
Traveling around the USA looking at, running and taking pictures of some Model Railroads in 2020.
Hello again!
Another year and some more layouts to look at I hope!
Digitraxx or NCE, time for me to choose
The family is going to get me a DCC system for Christmas. It's finally time for me to choose which brand I'm going with.
About the only givens are expandable and wireless throttle.
For quite awhile I've always kinda thought Digitraxx was the direction.
I've had a guy make a case for NCE.
Help me understand.
Thanks
The first Highland Railroad operating video
Uploaded the first video of operations on the Highland. This video shows the first job of the morning - switching out the paper mill. This is my first attempt at video editing and only my second operating session so go easy on me.
On a side note... this video is shot with my new iPhone 11. I’m quite impressed on the quality of video, especially since most of it is hand held. Anyway, enjoy!
Radicalized RS3m
I stumbled upon this critter recently and I think that my google-fu is lacking maybe as I cannot find many pictures and or information for this guy. I have been to RR archives and Don's photos but beyond that I am coming up empty for pictures especially anything overhead to show the hoods/roofs. Do any of you out there have further pictures and or proto type data/information on it?
My understanding is that Texas and Northern performed a rather radical modification of a RS3 to come up with this particular model.
Quiet Street Running
I am building a section of layout that requires a large section of track, including turnouts, embedded in concrete streets. I have done this before (pics posted on this site someplace) using plaster. That worked out well except for one detail, the SOUND! It was horrible, sounded like the train was running on glass rail! I vowed never to do that again.
On the last layout the track was laid on foam, no roadbed. This time the track is laid on homasote over plywood.

Never be afraid to make changes on the fly...
So today is another one of those days that highlight the constant changes that can be, and that are often made to a model railroad as they are being built.
It's often the case of a fresh set of eyes can change things, and the below case is just another example.
The yard lead into the Shippensburg Yard will undergo yet another change that will make operations much better & smoother too.
Youtube "for kid" recommendations on rotary dumper video
I recently posted a video of my scratchbuilt rotary dumper and indexer on Youtube. It currently has 125 views after a month or so. The really weird part is, when I've shown it to a few friends, viewing it on Youtube, all the recommended/suggested videos are Peppa Pig, nursery ryhmes and other little kid cartoons. I know kids are very smart these days but most are not interested in old Heyl Patterson rotary dumpers or have any skills to make such a thing. I'm wondering if anyone has insight to how my video got associated with kid cartoons.

All the world...
is just a stage. I'm taking the philosophy that I'm going to complete my layout one scene at a time. I view the layout as a series of 'sets' that the viewer passes through. Each 'set' will be visually isolated from the others to a certain extent so that people experience them one at a time. Within each 'set' will be a series of detailed scenes that the viewer has to carefully analyze to get an overall idea of the time and location of the layout.
How Not to Lose Small Things
Every time I have to install HO scale Nut-Bolt-Washers and similar tiny things, it seems at least two out of five go flying off into oblivion, never to be found. I cut them off sprues carefully and usually manage to keep them on my worktable. But grabbing them with tweezers is usually where they go astray. QUESTION: how do you successfully manage and control NBWs and the like and get them installed where they're supposed to go? All tips welcome.
Thanks, Alex
