I found this information about Logging operations and Lumbermills that some of you might find interesting.
this ebook has chapers on logging and milling operations and was published in 1910 so would be a good source for that era and later.

Getting the Backing Off AMB Shingles
I've been experimenting with the American Model Builders peel and stick shingles. Specifically set #285 3-tab shingles. I like the appearance of this product, they adhere well and take coloring very well. My problem has been with removing the backing from the shingles. I've been using a knife blade to try to find the separation plane for each strip of shingles. Sometimes I find it and sometimes I get a spot that is 2 plies of the paper. Once I get it started it's no problem. Does the group have any advice on starting a peel?
Automated crossing gates for layout?
Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good crossing gate system or source of plans to build one that could be used on my S scale layout. It likely would be designed for HO scale and need to be modified for S scale but perhaps an O scale version could be reduced in size? I'd like flashers/bell and operating gates and some kind of detection circuit to operate them ( I have DCC control on the rails) .

WIP UPDATE. CN Intermodal Yard on my Trenton Subdivision in N Scale.
Taking advantage of “Go Home/Stay Home” I have been able to make some progress on my Intermodal Yard. I have finished painting the caution and traffic lines in the yard and stenciled Traffic control points on the concrete pad. More details below.
DIY airbrush and compressor......
It's more of novelty but it was it was still interesting to watch

How much can an Arduino based DCC++ system handle?
My new layout will be larger than my old one. (238 sq.ft vs 176 sq.ft.)
Last time I wired my turnout machines to toggles and used control panels on the valance with a separate power supply. This time the Valance is only 5" high in the small room and 9.5" in the large room.
My DCC system is powered by a Raspberry Pi running JMRI connected to an Arduino powered DCC++ base station.

IAIS's West End - GP8 481 - one ugly girl - DONE
An old Jimmy Soul song, "If You Wanna Be Happy" , tells us...
"If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you"
US Freight Car Builders’ Marks
I know at one time there was a spot the had pictures of all the major US freight car builders’ marks that they painted or plated on every car built. There were, in the same manner, a collection of the marks for the major rebuilders and major Class 1, historical, car shops.
Any assistance would be appreciated. TIA

Any Model Ship Builders in our mix?
Morning all,
For some time I have contemplated building a Schooner / step ship.
Recent layout planing is leading to starting the project prior to the layout for a number of reason. The most promenade is to ensure i have enough deck clearance for the mast of the ships.
Im curious if anyone here has and model ship building experience they can share. My ideal would be to build a model of Wapama as there are very detailed plans available but I'm after a smaller vessel.
