Painting Appalachian Mountain Scenery
I'm working on a backdrop for my layout. I'd like to paint some Appalachian forested mountain scenery with a little more detail for the close mountains than just some green with a rough tree horizon. I've searched the web looking for resources on how to paint such a scene with acrylic paint, but am coming up empty. Anyone have any resources, tips, or painting instructions that might help me? Thanks!

Repowering older Atlas locomotive with Roco drive. Suggestions?
I have an Atlas/Roco GP 38 high nose that is in need of repower. Motor has a bad winding on the armature so it has almost no pulling power. Question is, what would be a good replacement motor that could be had for a budget project. This is a regular locomotive on my roster and I'm thinking of "shopping" it for a full overhaul. Should I just cannibalize another locomotive for another motor, or is there something a bit more modern of a motor i could use?

Preparing for operations on my room sized layout
I am going to begin operating on my NPBL room sized layout. This is going to be the teaser to get some interest. But more importantly to keep the informational only with the meat of the subject to follow.
The article in the January MRH by Lance Mindheim spurred me to get going having hemmed and hawed long enough.

Georgetown & Allen Mountain Railroad Visit 1-23-13
I had some vacation to use by the end of January or I would lose it. What to do with that free time? I was anxious to see what progress Michael Rose has made on his Georgetown & Allen Mountain Railroad and since I now live in Florida I arranged a visit. This was my third visit to see Michael and as before I had a great time - not just seeing the railroad, but talking to Michael. You see, Michael is a very interesting guy who has been a model railroader in various parts of the world.

Unconventional Lift-up
To bridge the gap across my cubicle entrance, I have used an unconventional lift-up design. An entire section of the layout lifts up and over. Not as useful as I would have liked, but a good learning project.

Some visualisation and a mishap
I asked my friend Matthias Hacker, to draw a sketch for my Ullapool station, for a better visualisation.
Here is the result.
During the tracklaying I missed to drill a hole in one of the throwbars of one turnout.
