Diaphragms

Is there such a thing as a good diaphragm?  I have just finished painting a pair of Cary E7 shells and they would look much better with diaphragms filling the void between the A & B units.  I have tried several different manufacturers diaphragms over the years without any success.  I have several Proto 2000 E7s,8s &9s that I have had to remove the diaphragms to prevent problems.  I also tried them on my Daylight passenger cars and had to remove them.

Newer Code 70 Shinohara turnouts

I have acquired a few newer code 70 Shinohara turnouts.  I know the old ones were notoriously non-DCC friendly.  How about these new ones?  Are they similar to the Walthers code 83 turnouts?  It appears that the metal connection between the points is gone but it looks to me like the frog is not isolated.  Any opinions about how difficult it would be to convert these to modern DCC.  I understand the basics but turning a Dremel with a cutting tool loose on the frog without knowing the pitfalls seems to be a way to destroy an expensive turnout.  Where to

The Importance Of A Good Vacuum

Novices be warned, building a model railroad is a messy business.  Owning a good vacuum cleaner during layout construction will benefit you throughout the layout's life.  Spend a decent amount of money on a good one.  Why?  Here are a few good reasons...

Using the family vacuum will cause you grief with the spouse.  It won't be there in the closet when she goes looking for it.  It will have plaster dust all over it.  It will be full every time she needs it.  Bad juju.  So get your own.

Tree making machine???

I saw a brief clip of a tree making machine a while back, possibly on a Dave Frary clip.

I cannot seem to find that clip or the name of that tree making machine.  Does anyone happen to know if that machine still exists and possibly have a link to purchase one if it still exists?

Thank you.

Roundhouse Boxcab Conversion.

Each week I check in on a couple of blogs like Thunder Mesa Mining, Stockton and Copperopolis, and Wreckers Reef.  Frank Palmer (Wreckers Reef) bought a Roundhouse Boxcab only to be very disappointed.  He was going to throw it in the junk box when one of the readers posted a link to a MRH members blog on how to make it run better.  Turns out it is GearedSteam's own blog.  So, I post the same link here for those who finally want to tackle this project.  There is a video with sound too.

Neodymium magnets for uncoupling?

Does anyone have experiences with neodymium magnets in the roadbed for uncoupling Kadees? Occasionally they are called super magnets.

I know some people swear by using bamboo pics but my hands are not steady enough.

Thanks

Doug

Looking for manual switch control with DCC and live frog switches?

I have some givens and druthers:

Givens: fifteen Peco code 83 electro frog switches; 4x8 layout w/ 3/4 inch plywood base (photo forthcoming), probably California roadbed (aka Homabed), & 1x4 fascia for control mounts; NCE DCC

Druthers: manual control of switches; auto polarity when flipping switch; nice looking switch stands

I've seen

Status of Model Citizen Video Project?

Has anyone seen anything published on the progress of the Model Citizen video project?  I've checked their website several times since they reached their funding goal of $30,000 earlier this year but have seen nothing on their progress since they met their funding goal.  Maybe I'm not looking in the right place.  Does anyone have an active website for them that shows their progress?

SMD LED size?

I'm currently working on an Athean GP 38-2 that I'm building for a friend of mine and want to add ditch lights above the anticlimber as in this photo.  Also having a bit of trouble determining what ditch light detail parts I need for this engine.  What size SMDs will work. I'm new to the SMD leds as I haven't used them before. P.S.  this is the actual loco I am building a model of.

Playing with a few things..

I have not posted progress in a while and defiantly did not accomplish my goal for this year. I have had major health issues for going on 8+ months and can barely get to work little own do anything on the layout.  Still not in good shape but the Dr. wants me do do something more than sit & read or play games on the computer.

So.....
