Help with signal placement

Looking for some input.  I am planning a staging throat that is just around the curve from a passing siding.  I am wondering the best placement of signals for this area.  My long-term plan is for computer engineer control for all through trains including meets, so I am planning a combination of block occupancy detection as well as IR detection in front of the signals.  The block occupancy would drive the signals and the IR would be to stop the train in the right spot in front of the signal.

Here is the actual track layout:

Under Layout Lighting...

So last night I decided to spend an hour or two building the housing for our under layout lighting.

Because the underneath portion of the layout will be used for storage and eventually some staging I wanted to install some LED's under it so that as I'm wiring and installing the signals & detection its already in and running.

Unprototypical prototype pictures

I was cleaning up some files tonight when I came across this photo I took last year at a plant in Winnipeg, MB. That got me thinking about things you could model that just wouldn't look prototypical even though they're modelled after actual prototypes. Set offs with no road is a good example. Do you have any unprototypical prototype photos?

DCC decoders not responding to address

I was given a Quantum sound decoder because it would not respond to the 4 digit address.  I installed it in an Atlas FP7 and it worked fine for some time using address 905, the loco number.  Then it stopped responding.  I use te reset code to reset to factory specs and it responded to 0003 as expected.  I reset the number to 905 and it did not work (Sound on, Headlight on, but not controlled by F0 and the loco would not run, no functions working.)  Reset to 003 and all worked.  Reset to 906, and now everything worked as expected, as has continued to work so far

Will a Cricut Expression work for MR items?

I received a Cricut Expression model for free.  I have the machine and the power supply, but no instructions or other information.  All the blogs use the other cutter and I would like to know if this one can cut out  structures and signs etc. and if so, what I need to make it workable.  Also, are the instructions sheets available? All I saw on the Cricut web site was a download  "Cricut Craft Room"   I would appreciate any help  Thanks.

Splicing into the main bus wires with Scotchlok #562's and wiring a swing out gate

I have 2 electrical questions. Can you splice into the main bus wires using Scotchlok 562 connectors to run another bus to an area too far away for feeder wires (4') and then splice back into the original bus? Also, on a swing out gate I just put up I want to stop track power about 1 1/2' on both sides of the gate when it's open so nothing will run off the table if the gates isn't closed. I've read articles on the wiring but nothing too clearly to understand.

Cricut Resources

Here's a thread where we can post ideas, images and examples of work done with the Cricut cutter or similar tools.

Operations at an iceing platform

I am looking at setting up operations at a creamery which uses ice reefers to ship products. My question is how do you incorporate the icing procedure into the operations. Do you load product first then move the reefer to the icing platform or ice first, then product? Since I can't see the engine setting around waiting for the ice or product to be loaded, is it a drop off and pickup later and if so how much time between moves should you allow?

DCC turnout control

I'm laying out a TOMA entry, and I am actually designing something for my own future layout, so there are some extra considerations.  For the entry, there are 6 turnouts in the main part.  I want them to be DCC controlled.

Replace Atlas RS36 frames with Athearn RS3 frame

I have four Atlas RS36 locos, two each in Norfolk and Danville and in Norfolk, Franklin & Danville for my collection. Plus I have two RS32s to represent future Arkansas & Missouri locos  that were rebuilt and painted on the Maryland & Delaware RR in Federalsburg, MD in the mid Eighties before deploying to Arkansas along with some T6 and C420 locos (Tony Hannold owned both railroads at the time).
