Defect Detector?

I've been trying to find a N scale defect detector or ways on how to model one. The problem is, I have no idea where to start and I don't want to buy an expensive defect simulator that is $$$. I also want something that isn't like the Dallas Model Works Defect Detector. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

I got this idea from djstrains on youtube.

Using Prolific USB-to-Serial Adapters with PC Software

This article has been prompted by several users of model railroad related software, including JMRI Decoder Pro and my own A-Track application for NCE systems, reporting difficulties in using USB-to-Serial adapters made using Prolific hardware.

Denver Derailment

The news this morning kept talking about a train derailment.  It is not nearly as serious as the recent ones in the news, but I thought it was interesting.  It made me wonder if anyone has included a scene like this on their layout.

RailPro v2 Released by Ring Engineering

RailPro-by-Ring-Engineering-LogoSomehow I missed the announcement, but Ring Engineering has released a second generation of their RailPro product line: Locomotive Module (LM), Handheld Controller (HC) and Power Supply (PWR). I have been trying to keep my eye on this product line for a few years now, and this comes as exciting news.

Thomas Yorke's Frijole Flats in N scale by Showcase Minatures.

For those of you familiar with Frijole Flats by Thomas A. Yorke, the station is available in N scale now. Showcase Miniatures has a license to produce his structures in N scale. Depending on popularity of the first kit sales, will determine future kits of Frijole Flats in N scale. Has anyone done the O scale kits?

National Model Railroad Association

Been a Model Railroader for ten years now and recently considered joining the National Model Railroad Association, (NMRA).  Based on the website, the organization seems "a little dated" including their achievement program.  (Is scratch building cars or locomotives a relevant skill in today's hobby?)

Curious of other peoples thoughts and experience with the NMRA.

Pipes & more Pipes...

The last few days have seen me complete the pipe work for the Chemical Transfer Facility that serves the Manufacturing Industry on the L&T Branch.

The main components are all Walthers kits.  There will be two(2) unloading & one (1) loading points for liquid and gas, and solid chemicals via the loading dock.

More to follow shortly as I begin to paint & weather.

Need Advice on Layout Design

Hi All,

Have just moved and now have much more space for a layout, as well as knowing we will be here for about 7 years at least. Since I wasn't too far along with my N scale modular layout, I've decided to make the jump to HO now that I have enough space to do what I want.

I have a wall in the basement that is about 30ft long - I'd like to do a 'shelf' layout - support from the walls rather than leg benchwork - and perhaps make it 2ft or so wide. Both ends would have turns, either dog-bone style, or a loop if there is enough room to hide tracks at the back of the shelf.
