Replacing Athearn (MRC) sound decoder

Okay I've had enough!! I love Genesis units from Athearn I have four F-7’s and 2 F-3’s all of which the sound works but the locomotives just do not move anymore or at best start and stop driving me crazy. I've taken one apart and removed the MRC decoder and it runs perfectly like a watch.

Gulf & Western HO Modular Layout NMRA 2013

I was going to put Joe and the MRH booth up first but decided model trains are more important. This Modular Layout caught my eye. There were many at the show.  Lighting, Building Structures, Effective use of Mirrors, along with a great consistent appearance.

NWP/Eureka/Scotia trip

I'm going to be able to make a trip over to the cost for a of day picture taking and history gathering.  I plan on seeing the Simpson mill in Korbel and Pacific Lumber in Scotia.  Do they still have the walking tour for PALCO? Anything else I should see while I'm there?  Anything AMR I should check out?   Anybody have a recommendation for a cheap and clean place to stay for a night - Motel 6?

TIA

New Bachmann GG1 in HO

One of the big surprises I saw covered at the NTS was Bachmann bringing samples of an all new tooling HO scale GG1 to the show. Looking at the photos of the sample, this looks like a pretty nice model so far. They said it will also have a sound value Tsunami option as well as non-sound versions. The best part is that this will probably be available for less then $200 with sound, which is about half the price of the MTH (the MTH does have DCC operated pans though).

Detail parts for interlocking

I am getting ready to install a crossing at grade with another railroad and will have an interlocking tower. Plans are to detail the with non-working rodding to signals and one switch and lock. I am familiar with prototype systems but haven't had much luck finding US-style detail parts in HO. I have found a few suppliers in the UK but they use square piping and the pipe and bellcrank stands are not US design. I could possibly use the bellcranks from UK but would have to scratch the other fittings. I would rather not have to mess with ordering from overseas.

Looks like I'll have to rail fan Sherman Hill in a couple or so years.

GE or EMD??

I've read in several places that describe GE locomotives as "temperamental" and sometimes "inferior", is there actual grounds to that or is it just a case of "used to EMD's and reluctant to change"?

just curious,

Dirty track in DC vs DCC

Hi guys.

This thread is started because of another thread and did not want to hijack it.

Some have stated that DCC makes the track dirtier than DC. Someone in the club had noticed since the switch from DC to DCC we run almost twice the traffic. The track does get the black gunk but operationally runs great. It is true that running more trains will keep the dust down. Most members run metal wheels but there are a few diehards that run what came with the car. This will not change until they do.
