Proto87 - Instructions for Detailed Parts

Does anyone know where I can find instructions for some of the Proto87 detailed parts?

I have the Turnout Throwbar and Hinge Kit F&E in HO scale but I'm not sure how to assemble it. There appears to be a white strip of some material across the throw bars that the parts are attached to that I can't find.

I also have their Scale Switch stand plastic kit which I hope to make operational but don't know how to assemble the kit either.

Any help is appreciated

Track Plan Help

I am starting my new TOMA style layout and need your help. I want this layout to be very operational. I know nothing about operational needs! I have never seen an operating session on another's layout. The first modual is 30" X 84". #6 turnouts will be used along with code 83 track.

I have been watching TrainMasters, searching this forum and reading back issues of MRH. However, I still feel like I really do not know what I am doing as far as track planning.

Please be very critical as to the plan's ability to be operational.

Plastic rail in HO scale?

Hi,

I am looking for plastic rails in HO scale but so far all the searches yield only the usual tracks and other accidental results. Do you know if such a thing exists at least? And maybe of a brand / model / search keyword that could give me that?

Preferred brands for hidden & staging track?

Hello:

I'm fiddling with Anyrail, fantasizing about a greater day with the basement of my dreams. I was wondering what brand/model/etc. of track you all prefer/recommend for hidden trackage? This would include brand/model for mainline track, turnouts (DCC-friendly!), staging, etc.

I'll be using Micro-Engineering, hand-lay, and all kinds of other delicate stuff in plain sight. For the out-of-sight trackage, it just needs to be reliable.

Thanks!

Cleaning weathered rail

I have some Micro Engineered with pre-weathered blackened rail.

What is the best way to remove the black from the top of the rails without scratching the rail. I don't want to use a bright boy or other abrasive methods.

Thanks in advance.

Bill.

Track Work: Rosin Core Solder vs. Solid Solder

I've read numerous posts here regarding hand-laid turnouts and the use of 60/40 or 63/37 rosin core solder during their construction. There are also debates pro/con about the need for use of flux with a rosin core solder.

That aside, am I correct that a solid core solder could also be used? But, in this case one would definitely HAVE to use flux with it?

How do you protect your backdrops when working near them?

I'm looking at using photo backdrops on my layout and have decided I really need to install them before putting in track and scenery; as ham-handed as I am, trying to slide them in over the top of everything after the fact sounds like a recipe for disaster.  I'm curious what order of construction others have followed when using backdrops and in particular what methods they may use to protect them from damage while working around them.
