Double Slip Turnout observations, Roco & Peco (including unifrog)

I've been working on a new track plan for my steel-mill / freight-yard scene. While doing so I included a double slip turnout. My original thoughts turned naturally to a Peco one since those are the great majority of turnouts I am using on my layout.

I discovered a few things yesterday while inspecting things in a little more detail

Installing missing ties...

Moving right along, last night I began the task of installing the missing ties from the track work.

It's a little tedious, but it moves along pretty quickly.  It also means that once completed I can begin painting the track.

Earl R Eshleman's, thru-deck, turnout linkages

Sometime ago I purchased a small number of these brass turnout links. I did not know what I really had until recently while doing an google image search I ran into a few links on ebay that were selling some. These are very nicely made, and look more versatile than I first imagined.

Purchasing Music Wire for Switch Machines and Animation

I'm working on improving the operation of my HO scale switch points by upgrading the wire that came with my tortoise switch machines from 0.025 to 0.032 or 0.039 music wire. Regardless of how closely I inspect the points for obstructions, I can't always find what is causing extra resistance to the movement of the points in my Proto 87 Fast and Easy Code 70 turnouts.

ME code 83 HO gauge flex tie dimensions

I've been searching the net for half an hour or more trying to find out what the tie dimensions and spacing are for ME code 83 HO flex (wooden ties). I'm really aggravated by the number of times I've seen the description of the stuff as "scale ties". Well, what is that exactly?

Ballast for HO track

I am looking at either Arizona Rock & Mineral for Woodland Scenics rock gravel for ballast (HO). Can anyone provide an estimate of what coverage I could expect for a single track mainline using the ARM ballast (per bag) or the Woodland Scenics quart jar and 25 lb bag. For the woodland scenics I am not sure if the fine or medium is better for HO (or a combination of the two).

Masking turnouts prior to painting

Good afternoon,

Everything I read about painting tracks talks about masking the turnouts prior to painting.  I'm sure I'm just Googling the wrong thing, but I can't find detailed instructions on how to do it.  Before I make a permanent mistake, does it look like I masked the turnout correctly?   Should I use more or less tape?  Is it in the right spots?  I plan on spray painting it using this color.
