Trackwork
Placed Roadbed for the Loveland Yard
Today I placed the cork roadbed under the tracks in the Loveland Yard. It looks pretty good and yes it did quiet down the noise when running trains on it. I also removed those ugly switch machines on the two Atlas turnouts that had them.

What is the best way to deal with short circuit in older turnouts with out replacing them?
Having switched to DCC in the last 2 years. I find that most of my 6 axle diesels short out on the turnouts. Usually at the frog. I suspect that the center wheel is making contact with the opposite rail and causing the short. I use automotive bulbs as a short management so most of the time its no problem as the locomotive will get through ok.
Advice on scratch building crossing
I am looking for advice from people who scratch build their own track work especially those that have built crossings.
After trying to build my first crossing, I think that I assembled the track components in the wrong order. I originally started with the inner frogs and worked my way out.
I now think that I should have started with the outer points, then the outer rails, then the frogs and finally the guard rails.
Does that order make sense to anyone? Is there a better order?

Spike Length
Does anyone know the length of Walters #948-360 Code 70 spikes? I am ultimately looking for 1/2 spikes, but I am finding that many manufacturers do not advertise lengths.
"Portable" Layout Table
I am building a 4 X 8 layout that is located in a spare room in our house. One day I know I will have to give up this room to be used for another purpose. To make moving the layout possible, I knew I would have to build it to come apart. Here is what I have done to make things easier on myself.
looking 4 someone who loves to draw trackplans
Good morning folks, By way of introduction I like to build models and would like to incorporate those into a working trackplan. I have no experience at this except for one seat of the pants build of an N scale layout.
I now would like to have a simple but yet well thought out HO trackplan for a logging to waterfront layout. Anyone willing to take some time and help further a plan would be most welcome. Thanks Pat
Atlas Code 100 Remote snap switchs
Can anyone help me please, I'm having a problem on my layout with my Code 100 snap switchs. When ever i run my 2-10-0 loco, or any other steam loco, i have a problem with the tender derailing. All my other locos are running fine. is there any ideas out there? i know there is, please help. thank you
"Shoo-fly" Free-moN Module (2'x6')
Ever since reading John Armstrong's Track Planning for Realistic Operations I've been intrigued by his drawing of a "shoofly" (page 123, 3rd ed.). It's a simple scene of track diverted over a fill while a crew repaired / rebuilt a bridge over a small stream, yet contained the possibility of multiple "stories" within the scene (not only the work on the rails, but the land just outside of railroad property: orchards, farms, roads, forests, etc.)
So I designed a 2'x6' "Shoofly" module:

What to do with track for crossing domino/section/module divides
As I begin to lay track, a question that I have not decided the answer for is what to do with the track as it crosses over from one domino/section/module to the next.
One thought is just to lay the track and cut where it reaches the ends of each one. My concern with doing that though is if there is any minor deflection in the benchwork, it with kink the rail vertically which invites derailments.

Need help identifying this rail and what it is used for?
Can anyone tell me what this rail is used for? I have some of this in what I think may be S or O scale. It's too big to be HO.
