Locos - Rolling stock (general)

WPM 2010 (lots of photos!)

Little late, but here are my WPM photos... Didn't get a good shot of me at the table, had a guy take some for me, but he must have been really shaky, they made me sea-sick looking at them!

Walthers Rolling Stock

I'm engaged in an active search to find some logging flat cars to go with a lumber mill scene that I am developing on my layout.  The is based on the Walther's sawmill kit from a decade ago and I have been chasing after some of the Walthers logging flat cars that go with it.   Luckily we model railroaders  have a habit of acquiring things to squirrel away so with enough time I should be able to meet my "needs" on Ebay. This is the only real option for a guy living on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to acquire items no longer in production.

moniker decals

Anyone know of a source for moniker decals in HO?  Common monikers are Bozo Texino, Conrail Twitty, Colossus of Roads, etc.

Definition of insanity!

Hope someone gets a kick out of this.  The lengths we go to are amazing!  I've been cutting out decals to do my second AMR all-door that has been gathering dust on my shelf for a few months, and I couldn't resist taking a pic of this.  I hear that you can get blank decal paper and print your own decals.  Maybe I should have tried that.

Sn3 Freight Cars as Early 55n3

The PBL Sn3 boxcar comes close to the Ohio River and Western #605. Sn3 cars just have to be raised up at the bolster.  HO trucks with 36" wheels become early 3 foot trucks. The #605 is the prototype for the Bachmann On30 car. Shown here with a Mantua ten-wheeler as a 4-4-0.

Sn3 also becomes 55n2-1/2 with a gauge of 31 and some change. That is really strange because that is what HO track scales out in O scale.

What is 55n3? Visit:

HO Bachman RF 16 Decoder install

I have recently puchased an HO Bachman Baldwin RF 16 and although it comes with a decoder installed I would like to install the Tsunami 608A Tubo decoder in it. I bought both the A and the B and plan to install the Tsunami in one engine and consist it with the other unit using the existing decoder.

I have never installed a decoder and wonder if someone can tell me where I can find a tutorial showing the necessary steps and modifications. Thanks in advance for the help.

GE U-boat footplates

Byron Rose's article on modeling the U18B has prompted me to pose this question to the group.  I am trying to detail Atlas' U23B to a 1972 era Western Pacific unit prior to the footplates coming off.  Atlas, in its' infinite simplicity, put a snow plow on both ends (IIRC) and this is not right for me.  Does anyone know of an aftermarket part which would be correct for a U boat footplate?

Please note, I am not speaking of the Drop Step.  The footplate is the part that is at each corner of each pilot.

My Old N-Scale Locomotive Fleet

Last week I had promised to show photos of my old N-Scale diesels from various manufacturers. These should be looked at while you think of the CommeNtary article in the September issue of MRH which happens to be quite good. Some of the photos are out of focus but you can still make what the photo represents. Keep in mind that these locomotives reflect late 1970s to early 1980s plastic moulding technology which is nowhere near what it is today. The mechanisms that drove these locomotives also left much to be desired.

Athearn Scale locomotives

Hi,

Was wondering what you folks think of Atherarns N scale locomotives? Years ago I worked HO and owned almost exclusively Athearn and found those engines to be well thought out, smooth running and easy to maintain. I am wondering if the same is true for their N scale offerings?

Currently I own Kato and Atlas and given the price difference I am concerned about the runnability of the Athearns.

I know I can't expect the same performance as I would with the higher priced engines but as long as it operates reasonably well I am willing to give them a try.

P2k GP38-2 questions...

Good day all,

Following some advice from people here, I am thinking of getting some of these units to replace my old Atlas engine I just got. I have search the web for some reviews on them but only found the one article on MRR website.

I have a few questions before purchasing them.

Are they DCC ready?

What kind of details do they have?

Also, can anyone tell me what the differences are between P2k and P1k locos? Some P1k locos are more expensive then some P2k, why?

Thanks for your time and as usual, your advices are well appreciated.
