Locos - Rolling stock (general)

INTERMOUNTAIN FP7A/F7B DCC ISSUES

LOCO: 2 x FP7A plus 2 x F7B INTERMOUNTAIN , Decoder NCE

Has anyone come across this issue: Locos will run fine in a consist then one or more will not run at all. If all locos given same address then same situation occurs. I have tried resetting the decoder cv30, cures problem for a short time only. Reseating the decoder can unlock the loco, as can reseating the light plug. Tried different decoder as well as different circuit board. On program track the locos always read ok.

Painting a N&W diesel

Hi

I am going to paint a N&W RS3 and it should not be to hard, its black with yellow handrails. But, and here is my question, what kind of black? I am looking at Tamiya´s assortment trying to figure out what to use...

Flat black XF1, Nato black XF69 or German gray XF63

Any ideas anyone?

Problem Children

Recently I began adding rolling stock to my switching layout after converting many to steel wheels and adding weights and adjusting coupler heights. I ran a few of these to check and enjoy the track work and industries at the upper level BD yard. One of the reefers kept derailing at a switch and losing a wheel and coupler. This was an RTR car right out of the box that checked out for weight and coupler height. After several "run bys" and much frustration, I set the "problem child" aside and proceeded onward.

Starting Over

Many years ago I stopped model railroading, mostly because I joined the Navy and wouldn't have room. My parents gave away my old HO scale train components, although my 1971 vintage Lionel train set still resides in their attic.

Bobber Caboose

To All: Another recent Bobber Caboose I assembled is this Delaware, Lackawanna & Western
offering from Virginia Foundry & Model Works by John Canfield. He sells craftsman
kits of early rail equipment. It will be added to my collection of cabooses
(about 120 in the collection). Yours, Elvin Howland/E. St.Louis Rail Group Layout

Canadian Budd Coaches - Rapido vs Walthers

I was surprised to see an ad for preordering Budd cars made by Walthers for the Canadian Pacific, these cars are to be preordered by Oct. and will be made Dec 2012

Whereas, Rapido is just finishing up their various versions of the Canadian. As the initial units are part of full sets of the Canadian it would see logical for Rapido to sell single cars and FP9's once the Canadian sets are completed.

Athearn Wreck Crane Turret Modification

In my blog on motorizing the Athearn wreck crane Ken Rickman presented an idea for transferring power from the wheels into the rotating cab of the crane. I didn't like Geoff's method on his article on the parts he used to transfer the power from the wheels to the crane cab. Then Ken presented an idea that I took and modified. His suggestion is here: http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/8956?page=6
