Operation and maintenance

Sooo, I needed a stable Loco Cradle in a hurry...
(I do hate when inspriation to Get-a-Job-Done strikes, but you can't lay hands on that tool you really need right this moment...
...fantastic way to waste valuable/rare time and effort, searching for the tool you need just to get-started...)
- couple of pieces of Foamcore, and an offcut of corner-packing foam
(a piece of lint-free offcut material, say the front of a discarded cotton T-shirt, could also work in a pinch)
New Bombardier ALP45DP delivered
New Jersey Transit ordered their first AL45DP in 2008. The first of the Tier 3 locomotives were delivered in 2011.
NJT ordered 25 more ALP45DP locomotives in 2017 and 2020. The first of the new batch of now Tier 4 locomotives left the factory in Kassel, Germany in December 2020. Currently more locomotives are delivered.
The leave the factory as road transport to Hamburg as their axle loads (32 metric tons) are to high for the German tracks (max 22.5 metric tons). https://www.dvz.de/fileadmin/user_upload/21b027BXXL1_UT_Bombardier_Kasse...
How do you keep track of DCC function mapping?
A recent thread on keeping track of consist addresses begs a similar question about function mapping. How can your operators know how you've set up your function mapping? This quickly becomes a complex issue if you use various decoder models, both sound and silent.
I was thinking of writing an article about my approach, but this photo simply says it all.

Interesting Opinions on Ever-Increasing Trottle Control Functions
There are a significant number of discussions going on over on this specialized forum. One that caught my attention basically discusses NCE system which is the one I chose long ago based on recommendations from users up in the DC/Balt region that was dominated by Digitrax early on.

Small 90 degree gearbox
I have a place where I want to be able to control some industry gates manually. Looking for a 90 degree small gearbox that would be attached to a pair of chain link gates at one end and a knob on the fascia at the other. So far have not found anything that small and simple. 1/8'' shaft at knob and gates . Any ideas ? --- Thanks, Ken

Metal wheels for dummy locos
I have 2 Athearn Blue Box dummy locos i want to put behind my 2 locos at our club. In order to do that i need to replace with metal wheels. I suppose i could just use the ones with gears, but expensive. Both have 6 wheel trucks. Ive looked on several sites with no luck. Anyone have any sources?!
Thanks
Atlas Trainman GP38-2 DCC Failed
G'day Everyone,
I suspect the decoder is stuffed but I thought I might try the brains trust first to see if you can save me losing the sound and having to install a new decoder.
I have an Atlas Trainman (GOLD) HO scale GP38-2 loco which is fitted with QSI sound. I normally run an NCE DCC system.
Local Freight Scheduling
Another question for you real world railroaders. Given a siding serving two or more industries such that the local freight might have to pull cars from the nearest or first on the siding to serve the furthest or last on that same siding. Also realizing that freight trains didn't run on tight schedules, my question is: How was/is the movement of the cars on the siding coordinated? Obviously the cars closest to the siding turnout have to be unpopulated and secured so they can be moved then the engine arrives to serve the industries further down.
Dremel Question (Corded, not Cordless)
Hi,
I have a question about two Dremel tools, both corded... Listed in the latest Micro Mark catalog are two choices:
- The Micro Rotary tool (20 watts, 6 oz weight)
- The Mini Rotary Tool (35 watts, 8 oz weight)
Does anyone have either of these tools, and if so, can you offer an opinion?
