How To Disassemble An ATLAS HO ALCO S2?

I have an ATLAS Master Line Series HO scale ALCO S2 with ESU LocSound and I'm attempting to disassemble it for a repaint (currently in B&O livery), but I can't figure out how to get it apart!  When I was a kid, getting the F7 shell off a frame was as simple as getting a finger nail between it and the chassis.  Not so with the more modern models apparently.

The best and worst model of an EMD F-unit???

So, Jimfitch and I were discussing Value Trains and agreed to disagree on that topic. An intriguing aside to that is this: What is the best model F-unit, and also what do you consider the worst? My picks are the Highliners kits, my least favorite is also probably the most common, the Athearn Blue Box.  Reasons, Highliners set the bar high and the ability to detail to a specific prototype.  The Athearn because the early drive was only able to go at warp 5 until the  rubberbands broke, and the shell is inaccurate especially the windshield.  So lets have it!

Bowser SD40-2 truck problems

I'm wondering if others have experienced problems with the trucks on these units and possible solutions.  I recently purchased one of Bowser's DCC/sound SD40-2 units.

drawings of low-emission or fuel-efficient diesel locomotives

In the past few years, companies like Brookville and Knoxville Locomotive have been selling diesel locomotives designed for fuel efficiency or low emissions. In the USA, some of these are built on frame and trucks from older units. The prime mover(s), electrical gear, carbody and cab are usually new. I'm focused on those built for industrial or railroad switching.

Has anyone published drawings of such a unit? I've seen a few photos (mostly from the vendors) but don't keep track of all the on-line and paper magazines.

Learning about rolling stock

I'm interested in modeling the C&O and/or B&O during the 40's in HO. I have some decent basic info on locomotives, but nothing on rolling stock. What is a good starter-source for info? I know very little, so I need basics first.

I know the difference between a frog and a hopper :) , but can't tell what kind of truck I'm looking at or remember when ribbed wheels went away. Internet (free) is better for starters than books, but I'll want a nice book eventually.

Improving Athearn 40' Boxcar Doors

Wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks to improve the bottom clasps on Athearn blue box 40' boxcar doors. They are quite hideous and since i have a number of them would like to make them look better.

GE doors ???

Does anyone know who makes separately applied detail parts for GE diesels? Specifically, I am looking for the doors that go underneath the cabs, directly beneath the cab numbers. It seems like most of these are molded into side sills that are part of the walkway on some models. My goal is to complete the cab without destroying the sill or another cab from another manufacturer, simply to get a couple of door castings.

Lets see your Rolling stock you just can't part with that isn't prototypical

These are three of mine:

Athearn flat car modified and with CNR decals.

Tichi flat car with CNR decals.

I don't know if this is a Stewart or Bowser kit.

N scale freight cars

I got my first set of 6 cars. I have a simple loop where I am running my loco. As I add the cars one by one, I see that upto 4 cars at a speed of 16, the cars stay on the track. If I increase the number of cars or increase the speed, the cars get disengaged and fall off the tracks. The cars are so light. Is there something I should be doing to make the cars stay on track? The cars have plastic wheels.

I heard that you may need to increase the weight of the cars. Would that solve the problem?

Could No. 592 be possessed? Some DCC troubleshooting ...

All the DCC was running fine yesterday, no prob, well-behaved.  Today I set 592 on live tracks and it took off at high speed on its own.  Hit reverse, and it took off backwards.  I think it hates me.

It gave me more trouble than any other during assembly, now this.  any suggestions?
