Wheel turns freely on Atlas axle gear?

Not long ago, I acquired a secondhand Atlas U30C with a bad wheel set. The axles were fine, so I kept them. After receiving my wheels today, I installed them and 2 out of 12 of the wheels turn in the axle ends (with minimal pressure) when you turn the locomotive over for servicing.

The axles have no cracks and are in good shape. What could I do to fix this so I don't have to shell out any more cash for a new wheel set?

Will Proto 2000 GP9 shell fit on Kato frame?

I have been asked if the HO scale Walthers Proto2000 GP9 shells will fit on a Kato frame.  Not having any such experience, I'm seeking some help answering the question.  Presumably, some of you may have done this  shell/frame swap.  Any help is appreciated.

My decoder Exploded!

So I was sitting down at the work bench having a great old time hardwiring a new decoder into a recent purchase when all of a sudden while testing the functions of the loco on my test track and with my face very close to the decoder it exploded!

There was quite a bright flash and a very loud pop sound, this is what it now looks like:

Rolling stock detection

I've just started fitting resistors to my first caboose. It's the first of many for detection in my storage yard, as the trains are backed into it.

KC&G's Motive Power n' Rolling Stock...

Not to be confused with the way a dog will stake out its territory (so your leg is safe), but this thread WILL be used as my central point of operation to discuss/share progress on my Kansas City & Gulf's roster and rolling stock sojourn. As always, as this thread unfolds over the coming weeks/months, input welcomed.

Custom Decals?

Don't know which forum would be the best to post this... but in my case it refers to decals for engines and cars... so I decided to stick it here in the Locos and Rolling Stock forum. Here goes...

Are there any small custom decal producers left?

I've tried contacting Bill Brillinger that used to do such (and was very active here at MRH for a while), but have received no response from him.

Keep-Alive for an Atlas Gold MD15 (and a bit of a review)?

I recently acquired an Atlas Gold MD15 switch engine with ESU LocSound installed.  The engine looks good and sounds good.  It crawls along right out of the box!  The only issue I have with it is that it tends to die on turnouts (almost as if there is only one set of pickups, which I would be surprised to find).  None of my other engines are having this problem.  My track is pretty clean, and I am a fan of rubbing graphite on the rails.  My turnouts are Atlas #4s (I know, I know, but they were on hand).  I've never tried a keep-alive, and am wondering i

Atlas Gold undec GP7: Quick Review

On a roll, (got one of my F units ready for paint) I took one of my Atlas "Gold" DCC/Sound equipped GP7's and got it to the "ARTP*" stage.

* Almost Ready To Paint

Here's a pic of it:

Strange little offering, this Atlas GP7. Supposed to be Atlas' latest and greatest top-of-the-line offering. BUT... working on it caused some of those "WWTT?*" moments in me.

Interesting Flat Car Loads from the 1970's

I've been sorting through photos that I took in the early to mid 1970's. Here's some interesting loads you could consider modeling:

1) PRR 469384 - Altoona PA, September 1975. A flat loaded with what appears to be an fresh Alco locomotive truck. It was on an westbound train arriving Altoona.
