Locos and rolling stock

photos of Tichy 120-ton crane model (HO or N scale)

For an upcoming presentation, I urgently need photos of the Tichy wrecking crane under construction, or (preferably) finished and ON SOMEONE's LAYOUT. Either the HO or N scale models will do.

I have the photos from the Tichy web site, And lots of prototype pics.

These models were designed by Bill Gould and set a high standard for styrene kits when released in 1982.

Truck and wheelset painting

There are as many ways to paint trucks and wheelsets as there are modelers. I've seen people use special jigs to avoid painting the needle point axle ends or wheel treads, or even masking the journal bearing surface to avoid painting it. Those methods are functional but are way too much work for me.

Interesting Covered Hopper Info

I just wanted to share this interesting publication from the USDA on shift from 263K to 286K covered hoppers.  It has some interesting graphs showing the percentage of of grain carried in each type from 1995 to 2010 and is a nice reference if you're building a prototypical fleet.

For my notes I have the following for C-113 hoppers:

ACF 4600 - Accurail, Athearn Genesis

91% vs 99% Isopropyl Alcohol

IF either can be found during this zany situation we're in...

Which is preferred for paint striping?

I've used 91%, but my supply is running low. Any harm in using 99% to strip paint?

Any input appreciated.

Sources for HO caboose end railings / brake wheels?

Is anyone aware of companies which makes etched brass caboose end railings / brake wheels in HO scale?

Two friends and I are contemplating creating HO scale models of GB&W's wood bay window cabooses. We're trying to source end railings / brake wheels for the model. One idea is 3D printing (we are going to hire a company to 3D print the basic car body) but we'd also like to explore other materials — especially etched brass — as an option because we think we may achieve better detail that way.

Steam Prototype Pulling Power?

I've been collecting HO rolling stock and engines for over 10 years, but never had a layout. So just recently I have begun to plan a NYC layout and gear my HO collection more closely to the prototype. Thus, I was reading through Terry Link's Canada Southern consists in order to determine what NYC freight trains may have looked like in the late '40s and early '50s. But then this consist appeared:

Batches of cars

I'm working on some batches of log flats, based on the Tichy flat car kits, for our Sugar Pine Lumber Company layout. Typically I'll be doing about six at a time which is enough to make numerical progress without driving myself crazy.

sound decoder for RDC

I want to install a sound decoder in my Proto 1000 RDC.  Ideally it would contain a conductor's voice.

Thanks for any help'

Growing the fleet

We have temporarily paused our layout work to focus on building our log car fleet. It doesn't make much sense to lay all the track and not have enough revenue cars to sustain operation. Fortunately, with just a couple of detail tweaks and additions, the Tichy HO scale flat cars are dead ringers for the Pacific Car & Foundry log flats used by the Sugar Pine Lumber Company but lettered for that operation's common-carrier division, the Minarets & Western Railway.
