Locos and rolling stock

Car storage - keep the boxes, or not?

As I build more kits to increase my fleet of rolling stock, I am left with a question.  What do I do with the boxes the kits came in?  My first thought was to toss them, since the cars will be stored on the layout or (eventually) in storage drawers.  But something in the back of my mind is saying that's a bad idea, even if I can't figure out exactly why.

Body mounting an Athearn Shell

I have fine tuned an old Athearn SD40-2 and would like to cut off the lug mounting system on the side and attach the shell with screws, somehow.  Does anyone have any suggestions or pictures on how to do this?  Thanks.

Help me understand

I have been spending some time drooling over the 2-10-10-2 locomotive. I thought the Big Boy 4-8-8-4 was the largest steam locomotive ever built. Was the 2-10-10-2 larger?

Thanks,

Gary

Two North American A4's are coming back to the UK

Nestling in two museums in North America are two all-time classic British railway locomotives.  At the National Railroad Museum, Green Bay Wisconsin is the A4 Pacific "Dwight D Eisenhower", this link takes you to the page http://www.nationalrrmuseum.org/en-Us/exhibits/exhibits/default.aspx click on the slideshow and it is picture 11.

Looking for a prototype

In my usual style, I'm building the model first and looking for a prototype afterward. smiley

I have a couple box cars which closely resemble 1937 AAR 40' cars, except that the side sills are smooth (imagine cutting the tabs off the bottom of the sides) and the body is about a scale foot longer.  They have 3-3-3 Dreadnaught ends.

Does that sound like any particular prototype?

pre-WW2 patch technique?

How would a small hole or rust spot in a steel box car side be repaired in the 1930s or '40s?  Today, I know they would weld a patch onto the surface, or if the metal is too thin, glue it on.  Would a 12" square (or so) patch be welded on in those days?  Riveted?

I am building a couple box cars and I need to repair a couple spots low down on the sides.  Before I break out the putty, I thought maybe I'd see if I could use a simpler and more charismatic patch.

Single Shaft DC Motors > Source

Jameco electronics has a stock of DC motors. Some of these motors may be suitable for switch machines or locomotive re-power projects. The motors have specification sheets available. Most of the motors are normally stocked, so repeat purchases are possible. They are reasonably priced.

I have used this distributor for a number of years and have found them to be reliable. My friend has used some of their motors to re-power a few steam engines. We have found that the suitability of the motors varies. We usually buy one or more and test them before he uses them.

P2K SD60 question

Can someone tell me how to remove the fuel tank off a P2K SD 60 loco?  Need to get at the screws to get the weight off to get at the gears for lubrication.  I recall reading somewhere that the fuel tank is held on only with double sided tape and needs to be pulled off.

Also, do any wires need to be cut to get the weight off?

Thanks,

John

Who makes transition era covered hoippers?

There seems to be no end of giant grain hoppers available from the '60s and later.  But as a transition era modeler with a strong bias toward steam power, I need pre-1955 covered hoppers for dry sand and cement service  -  such as the earliest PS-2 2600 cu ft cars.  Some gray colored, either undecorated or (preferably) data only (oh, please, Accurail!), some in mid-western or southern roads from 1954 or before.

Painting with spry cans

Can you get good results spraying a fine detail model with a spray can? If so is there any particular brand that works best? I am replenishing my paints and there seems to be a lot more choices on the market now then the last time I was modeling. I have some rolling stock and especially some diesels that need painting and it is not feasible to set up my air brush. Someday we will be in a house and I can set up a proper paint booth and compressor but not right now. Thanks.
