Locos and rolling stock

Question about the new Atlas GP9 N Scale.

Has anyone seen under the shell on these units?

Can the new Atlas GP9 (N scale) be converted to a dropped nose with DCC?

I really want to model a GP9RM like this: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=410778&nseq=4

Thanks

Genesis HO SD75i Derails

I recently purchased and weathered a Genesis HO SD75i engine. I didn't even test it, the first thing I did was to install a Digitrax decoder. I tested it then but only on a straight test track and whenthat was done it went back on the workbench for weathering. When it was finished it went directly onto my layout.

I guess I should have tested it sooner, it derails on every corner. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Athearn tells me the truck or trucks are warped and all it will take to correct the problem is to twist it with my hands.

Off Layout Car Storage

Am looking for ideas to store freight cars off layout.

I'm planing on having a rolling cabinet with drawers or shelves for storing the cars.  Any ideas some of you have

used, either laying flat or standing upright ?

Locomotive help

There are so many manufacturers of both steam and diesel locomotives, but which ones are really good running and worth purchasing? I don't want to buy something that is not going to be quality. I really need your advice as I am about to purchase some steam and diesel locomotives for my era 1956 layout.

Thanks so much for your guidence...

Picking the roster

I'm staring to get my arms around my next layout.  It will be based on the Boston and Maine.  With the recent discussions on setting a time and place and era police, I'll share some of my (probably fuzzy) thinking and conclusions with all of you.

Your comments are appreciated.

Canadian or Canadien National

I was admiring a photo of a nicely modeled boxcar in another thread when I noticed it was lettered for "Canadien National". I was pretty sure that should be "Canadian" so I looked it up on google. The official website seemed to be "Canadian" oriented.

Am I being my usual ignorant self or is either spelling of the railroad's name ok?

N Scale 40' Tank Cars

It seems I am missing a piece of the pie here. I have a small number of cars on my layout, about 25, all of my cars are weighted to exactly 25 grams and all have Micro-trains trucks and all run perfectly with the exception of my 40' tankers. These cars tend to derail at a higher rate and want to roll to one side or the other no matter how evenly I weight it or how well I try to center the weight, I use modeling clay for the weight since it is easily molded and I can put it exactly where I want it.

Intermountain Coupler Boxes

Coupler and Draft Gear Ramblings:

If this has been addressed somewhere else, my apologies, but why in the world does Intermountain glue the lids on their coupler boxes?  I don't have many problems popping them off and for the most part I can drill through and use a screw to reattach, but it can be tedious.  I think even Kadee does this, but usually no reason to replace their own couplers obviously.

New painting shortcut, and some creepiness...

I had an old roundhouse business car that had seen better days, and decided to spend a bit of time working on it.  I had also been reading a bit of horror lately, and it inspired me.  The reason this is worth posting is that I discovered a good way to do some painting.  After soaking the body in rubbing alcohol and removing the paint with a toothbrush, I spray painted it black.  Then, I tried something different.  I used a DecoColor Calligraphy marker from Michael’s Art Supply to do the trim.  Since the trim is raised, it took me perhaps 15 minutes to

Bachmann 70-ton single motor version

A recent thread (http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/9792) about the two motor version has led me to start this discussion of the single motor (current) version.

I am looking to model a shoreline railroad (the Santa Maria (California) Valley Railroad in early 1962. At that time they had a light Mikado and 5 70-ton GEs and (the very first) U6-B. http://mrdccu.com/layouts/SMVRR.htm

I can kit-bash a 70-ton into a U6-B. however, the issue is getting a good 70-ton loco to start with.
