Locos and rolling stock

Model Road Number Accuracy?

I have a Bachmann Diesel Locomotive that came in a set as a door prize at a model railroad show nearly 10 years ago.  It's not a great model really, but I thought it might be worthwhile trying to improve it...?  I started by trying to find out more about the real unit and that's where things got confusing...

The model is a GP40, (as far as I can tell) painted for the Canadian National road and numbered #5075

Now, from the information I can find online, the real CN unit 5075 was an SD40-2, retired in 1999.

Hazardous Chemical signs

Hi all,

I am currently weathering a few GATX tank cars (Athearn Genesis) and noticed the triangle chemical signs are missing.Does anyone make these in HO? Be a nice touch to the finished model and the customer might like it too!wink

Thanks for any help.

Jumper Between Locos

Have any of you come up with a good way to jumper between hood unit locomotives?

Has anyone successfully used transparent decal paper on a dark (engine black) background?

My experience has been that the graphics "disappears" into the black background even though the printer settings have been preset for maximum ink.

The only success so far is to print the design on white (non-transparent) decal paper with a black which is very close to the loco color, and touch up the edges with black paint.

After weathering, the decal blends right into the paint job.

Anyone have anything to share about transparent decal paper.

Thankls,

George

Most collectible models????

I'm new to the hobby......after thoroughly enjoying my trains MANY years ago and I'm curious to tap into the collective wisdom of the group. What are some of the most collectible models? And do serious collectors actually run (or display) their trains or do they leave them sealed in the box? Thanks for any suggestions....

Accurate History of Rivarossi HO model of Allegheny

Does someone know an accurate history of the HO model Rivarossi Allegheny 2-6-6-6??

Where was the original model constructed?

Were there other manufacturers subsequently involved?....not just other owners or distributors such as Hornby and Walthers, but actual manufacturers?

Were any of these built in China, with perhaps different motors etc?

Learning to be a mechanic - car issues

Well, my "Learn to be a mechanic" quest has started.

I took a handful of inexpensive rolling stock that were part of a couple of Ebay purchases and upgrade them to body mount Kadee couplers.  I switched out the plastic wheels for Kadee metal wheels and then adjusted coupler heights on all of them using the Kadee coupler gage.  They run worse now, lol.

ID this model?

Just wondering if anybody can help me identify these kits I recently acquired. They are probably pretty old. The characteristic part is that the shell has 4 tabs protruding from the bottom which snap down into rectangular holes in the "fuel tank" part of the chassis. The motor and chassis have sort of an old "blue box" look to them.

Pictures to follow momentarily...

Looking for very basic Diesel Spotters Guide, Union Pacific preferred

I live a mile from Union Pacific Track.  Don't recognize the diesel engines.  It would be great to know, not only the spotting features, but even the words that are used in train spotters' guides.

Bicentenial cars--are these prototypical?

I snapped these up at Springfield yesterday--at fist glance, I planned on repainting them.  But, they are pretty, and I was wondering if they existed for real, or are Roundhouse doing some freelanced cars?
