Locos and rolling stock

Is it worth restoring?

I just can't resist a box of junk steam engines in need of TLC!  At a train show last weekend, I bought such a box, and inside was (among many other things) an old Mantua 0-4-0, more or less complete.  It runs when I power the brushes directly (didn't even try putting it on the track yet), but it definitely needs some work in both the maintenance and detail departments.

Removal of Shell from Bachmann Alco RS-3 Loco

Hi,

I am trying to remove the shell from a Bachmann Alco RS-3, but I am not having any luck.  This is my first attempt at disassembling a loco so I am not familiar with how to do it.  I removed the screws that hold the couplers in place, but that didn't make any difference.  The shell is still firmly in place.  Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Color for Engine

I am trying to paint an engine form Chicago & Illinois Midland.  Micro Scale says to use a color called Warehouse Green.  I cannot find it.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks!

Question aboout those magnetic air hoses.

I can't find the article(s) about the self-coupling and uncoupling magnetic air hoses, they were posted a couple of months ago ?

My question: do they conduct electricity ? Need a simple way to pipe a low DC voltage from one car to another, without the need for manual (dis)connecting.

TIA

cheers, Leo

Can I Run Two A Unit Locos Together

Hi,

I am considering the purchase of two Bachmann Alco FA2 A units. I would like to run them together, back to back, but I am not sure how to accomplish this. I'm assuming that if I just set them up back to back and turn on the power that they will be fighting one another.  I'm guessing that there is something that can be programmed to overcome this, but does this feature really exist?  I would hate to buy the two A units only to find out that they can't be run back to back.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tomix chasis questions

On ebay, there's several n-gauge chassis available by Tomix.  Does anyone know how reliable they are at slow running, and hauling?  Getting just the chassis will be great, since they'll turn into HOn30 locomotives.

Rolling stock quality/value

New guy here.  What in your view would be the quality ranking of the current major rolling stock manufacturers.

Primarily interested in kit or RTR covered hoppers, open hoppers, a smattering of the other common types.

If you were populating a basement layout with 100 or so, which line would you consider to be the best value.

Finally, your suggestions for best sources; eBay new used, on line suppliers etc.

Thanks

Athearn: All-New Locomotive - 20 April

It might not be the latest news, however there is lots of speculation on this:

What is the average lifespan of a railroad car?

Can anyone tell me what the average lifespan of the different types of railroad cars are?

E.g. Boxcars, Tankers, Hoppers etc..

Buying your very first locomotive--care to share pics and recollections?

I suspect that many of us got started with equipment given as a gift, or handed down, or that parents bought us.  But I thought it might be interesting to share recollections of the first locomotive each bought with their own money.  To me, that is a real threshold--buying your first ocomotive.
