Using Krylon Matt spray

Ok, I've gotten my powders and water based paints to do my weathering. I was going to try the powder and 70% alcohol mix, elmers white glue and powder, and mix powder with paint.

I've read and seen people using Krylon Matt finish instead of Testors Dullcoat.

Should I spray the car with the matt finish BEFORE I add the powder and paint and then again afterwards to seal it?

Cutting brass

Breaking into a new area for me.  Brass add ons.  But what is worse, the brass add ons need adjustment.  For example, the one I was just working on.  A brass grating.  Only problem is, it is too wide and too long and needs to be cut in 2 dimensionsl

SD38 & Thrall All-Door Box car modeling

I'm wondering if anyone would have a good starting point for modeling US Plywood's Thrall all-door box cars in HO?  Where would I find scale drawings?  I'd like to model a set of all-door box cars initially made for McCloud River Railroad some time ago (ok, a long time ago), and they were owned and marked for US Plywood.  Does Details West, Detail Associates, or others make suitable doors, car ends, etc?

Body Removal Athearn SD60-I

Anyone done this? I removed the couplers and 1 screw beneath each truck...still the body seems firmly attached in the rear. Am I missing anything?

Thanks

A Few Questions About Intermountain Wheelsets

I'd like to start changing out the plastic wheelsets in my car fleet with metal ones.  Over the years the Intermountain wheelsets seem to be highly regarded so I thought I'd order a bulk box of those.  The stock number for the 100 pack of HO 33" wheelsets is 40055.

Replacement Trucks - Opinions needed

Hi

I have acquired a reasonable quantity of second hand rolling stock ranging from Athearn Blue Box kits to a mixed bag of other built up stock of unknown manufacturer.  Stock is predominately Box Cars, Cabooses and Gons. The trucks and wheel sets range from very good condition to instant derailment territory.  Some have metal wheel sets but most have plastic.

Franklin MInt HO Hudson and Pacific

Our club (Olde Newburgh Model RR) recently received donations of two Franklin Mint Engines. Has anyone tried to work with these engines to improve their performance?  And we can't see any obvious way to disassemble the boiler from the frame...if we could we think we could fix the "hippity hop" in the mechanism and get a decent running engine.

Spectrum (Bachman Industries) EMC Gas Electric Doodlebug

Just finished fixing the split gears on both of my Doodlebug's. The first set were split to the point it was easy to see the crack while mounted on the axle. The second one it was very hard to see the cracks.

Here's my fix.

First the two Doodlebug's

The two front wheel sets. Note the helical gears.
