What is it and why is it here?

I found these in Brownfield Texas. They look like F40s except for the nose on one and the lack of exhaust fans on the second. San Luis & Rio Grande, and speed lettering to boot. The were being used as local power. They were consisted with a ex-BNSF GP35u LTEX 2581

Athearn F45 g67636 --- need help

I acquired an Athearn F45 loco today from the LHS used for a great price, with one issue. The front wheels spin freely. I look the top off and the drive shaft is in good condition. Leads me to believe that the problem is with the gears in the truck. I have no experiences opening one of these to check for broken gears. I have looked for a tear down how to and to no avail.

Any ideas or suggestions from the community?

Here is the model

45' or 48' containers ???

Hey Gang,

So, I think I understand that container sizes are based on Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEU). Apparently most container ship holds are based on these TEUs and so 45', 48' and 53' containers are used for North American transport only. I have seen where 45' containers are used in trans oceanic shipping but I do not have a source for that info.

I still see 48' well cars being used to haul 1 or 2 TEU units in the lower stack and anything as big as 53' on the double stack.

Kitbashing a pair Canadian Pacific gp35

Hi,

I had a deal on a pair of Athearn rtr Canadian Pacific gp35. At first I thought that
a good weathering job and a few details here and there was all they
need. But when I started to look for some prototype reference picture
it doesn't take long to realize that those cp model are all wrong.

Fist the Bell and headlight are not at the right place.

Fine, that's an easy job. Let's do it and they will run again in a week.

Bachmann 2-6-6-2 gear train slip

After a year or so of inactivity due to major layout reconstruction I was testing the layout operation with a coal drag with a Bachmann 2-6-6-2 C&O H4 as the helpe engine.  I noticed when the drag stalled on the grade, the front engine was working, but the rear engine had stopped.  Obviously, something in the gear train is slipping.  Before I tear into the loco, I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and has a fix been identified?

They're here - my dozen boxcars

Due in Jan, finally delivered today.  Hm,  only 4 months late?

Renumbering decals already in, replacement wheelsets in the same box from the same order.  Kadee #5s on hand - oops, have to order alternative weights....

At least something good.  The replacement wheelsets also cover the ones needed for my caboose superdetailing.

I will say the detail looks good though.

Have to wait on the weights to start construction though, argghhh

Maine 2-footer widths--trying to find

I've been searching for the width of Maine two foot gauge passenger cars, with little success.  Scaling from photos suggests anything from 6 to 8+ feet wide--and they are not 8 feet normally--one reference shows that one 8' wide excursion car was the widest of the lot.  One locomotive had a tender 8 1/2 feet wide.

I see some HOn30 passenger cars on Shapeways that scale out to 7 feet, and look good--but will they be too wide?

Standard connections between engine & tender?

I'm starting to think about my future D&W locomotive fleet.  There will be at least 7, possibly 8 available for regular service, not counting whatever Southern locomotives I build for the purpose.  Of those, 5 shared two tender designs, and at least one tender was swapped between two of them in late '39 or early '40.  I do not know if any other tenders were ever swapped, or why the one was.  Depending on the exact date I want to model, I might need either one or both tenders for that one locomotive.

Another project: Scaling from a photo in Sketchup

I jump around all over the place, but this at least relates to multiple projects that I already have on the bench.  With the purchase of the new TCS sound decoder, I need a tender in which to install it.  I already have the loco(s), but the tenders are all wrong, so...

Repairing and cleaning older locos

I have a couple of older locos that are still running, but do need service.
Suggestions on how to clean them and where to look online?
Thanks.
