How do you clean loco wheels?

Now that I've managed my Labor Day goal of getting my track down (all 20 ft of it), I've discovered the wheels of my Bachman 44 tonner exude black gunk. After a just a couple of weeks on a shelf, it stalls randomly on shiny rails. It's particularly sensitive to track irregularities (nice of it to point those out), and starts up again with just a breath of a push, so it clearly has dead spots on the wheels.

Hi,

In order to commemorate "500 Likes" in my model trains page in just 13 months (!), I decided to produce a photo regarding this milestone.

These are the models shown on the above photo:

New coal cars

Ok, so I acquired 13 new RTR coal cars yesterday from a major vendor.  These are 34' 50 ton cars.

I expected McHenry couplers, and am 9/13 done switching them out for Kadees.  They came with metal wheels, good.

The cars seem light to me, but I was going to add weight anyway, so no biggie.

Cab Interior Photos for SD40-2W?

Does anyone have detail photos of the cab interior from a CN SD40-2W ?

GP38-2W or GP40-2W would be fine also ;)

Installing ditch lights

I am savvy on wiring and soldering and the electrical portion of installing LEDs in locos, the thing I'm having trouble with is installing led's in some details west late-style pewter castings so they look right. I'm using 0602 smd' and they always look lop-sided in the housing... I'm starting to think I'm using the wrong type of led for this part, or the wrong part for this LED... I've found plenty of articles on wiring, but almost nothing on installing... Does anybody have any info that my newb self is unable to find?

Best Brand Out There

Based on my limited experience, I think Kato produces the best locomotives out there for N scale. Is there a close second to Kato?? I have a couple of Bachmann locomotive and they run sporadically on my layout. My track may not be perfect but the Katos I have run fine. I'm just looking for a close second to Kato for a steam loco.

Thanks-Tim

Loco run intermittent around the track

I just added a Bachmann 4-6-0 loco to my collection. It runs 'spotty' around the track. I've cleaned the track and the loco wheels. I've also soldered every joiner. I'm running a DCC system and don't have any problems with my Kato diesel locos. I know Bachmann isn't the same quality, but it seems to run really poorly. It doesn't pull much either, but I'm hesitant to add any Bullfrog Snot yet, as it may interfere with the pickups, if that's the problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks-Tim
