Locos and rolling stock

Moving new locomotives...on their own wheels or on flatcars

New steam locomotives have to move from their builders to their owner--how was this done.  Obviously, something like a Shay, or a narrow gauge loco, has to be taken on a flat car, but when would other locos run to their destination under their own power, when would they be towed on their own wheels, but cold (like the Big Boy today) and when would they be transported on a flat car?  I'm working on some rolling stock for the '20's, and a locomotive load could be an interesting one.

Bowser C430 fitting a decoder?

My WNYP C430 arrived awhile ago but I've only just got round to getting the weathering and decoder instillation. The loco came with no instructions other than for lubrication so I have no idea which pin1 is on the 8pin socket, also does the 21pin blank need to be removed aswell. Tracing the motor wires is not easy either as nearly all wiring is red/yellow. Decoder will be a Zimo when it arrives next week.

Advice on obtaining a memorial Canadian Passenger Train

Hi All,

A very good Canadian Army mate of mine was recently killed in a military accident and I want to put together a memorial train to him on my layout. I currently have very little knowledge of Canadian Railways so I was hoping someone could advise me on what I need and how I can get it.

Paragon2 Motor Control problems

Hi,   I've got a Broadway Limited SD9 with a Paragon2 decoder in it.  I love the sound, but the motor performance really annoys me.  I'm guessing it's just a matter of setting the CVs correctly, but this decoder has so many BEMF/Kp/Ki/Kd-type settings, I have no clue where to start.

What is this? Updated Picture

Found this Bachmann part in a on sale bin. Have a guess as to what its purpose is, just want to confirm it.

Thanks

Halloween Train

The Nighttime Express

Some time ago, I write this little drabble for fun--and I've decided to make a Halloween consist.  I'm not planning on something like you see in stores for Halloween villagesw, but a somewhat reasonable consist for the Grim Reaper's train.  Details of the consist after the little drabble here

Single & Double Sheath Boxcar

Does anyone know if there was a "phase out" date for wooden sheathed boxcars?

I found the build dates, but don't know how long the cars were in service.

I'm modeling 1955 and would like my rolling stock to be appropriate.

Re-motoring old steam brass locomotive

I'm back to model railroading for the last year and a half after a 30 year hiatus. (Glad I saved all my stuff). My wife and I have built a 10 X 12 foot layout in a spare bedroom in our house.

Help with Keystone Shay Build

I recently purchased a Keystone HO 20 Ton 2 truck Shay kit and had the intention of building it as a working locomotive.  However, I have hit a brick wall as NWSL have advised me that they no longer make the kit for turning this little beauty into a working model. Ray Schofield has already been of huge assistance with some very helpful information but I am now on the hunt for the NWSL Kit #208-06.
