Locos and rolling stock

#144 The Berkshire, makes a station stop

The Berkshire, train # 144 makes its stop at Canaan Station on its way to Pittsfield, Mass.

Another of my attempts to dub in sound from recordings and/or DVD's, as most of my motive power is straight DC with no sound.

When do you remove masking tape?

When you're painting a model which needs to be multiple colors, after you've sprayed the last color, when do you take the masking tape off?  I think I've heard that it's better to let the paint dry completely, then carefully remove the tape, but I usually end up taking it off ASAP, while the paint is still wet.  My logic is that, once the top coat has formed a hard film, I'm more likely to tear a jagged edge when I take the tape off.  I also like to try to clean up any spots where the paint bled under the tape by gently scraping with a scrap of styrene - e

New Haven moving through Canaan...

A New Haven thru freight passes Canaan Depot on its way up the Berkshire...

Nothing fancy, dubbed sound on my DC layout.  Hope it gets the "mood" of NH moving freight.

Late 80's CSX stencil decals

Looking to do a renumber of a HO scale Atlas Chessie GP38 into a CSX number with the tiny CSXT stencil on the cab as well. I looked at Microscale's offerings but couldn't tell by the images in several of the sets if what I am looking for is available from them. Anyone know of a decal manufacturer who makes this or will I need to scrounge together what I might need.

Thanks.

Wow - just got an e-mail

From a vendor (Hint, while not a supporter of this magazine, the vendor was mentioned in my City of Miami article as they supplied the weight systems and the body mount coupler setups).  I have also used his weight systems on my 13 IC boxcars, 20 Athearn tank cars, 16 IC Accurail Gondolas, and quite a few other pieces, so I am a good customer as well....

Options for re-lettering rolling stock

Hi,

just recently I've settled on a name and theme for my N-scale railroad. Sure I do have a number of existing locos and wagons, some of which I want to keep, even though they fit somewhat marginally... Well, the railroad is buying used equipment for cheap...

Now I was thinking about some quick-n-dirty re-lettering. Not a full re-painting. Has anyone tried using home-printed self-adhesive labels from some office-supply stuff? They are rather thick, more like plated-over, I guess... Is it possible to remove them later on (should I want to re-paint)?

Electrical Pickup In Old N Scale Kato Locomotives

i found a bunch of Kato locomotives in a box in my shed.  Some were dead when I tested them on my test track.  I took the shell off one of the dead ones and rotated the motor.  The headlights now work.  I even got it to run a few inches before it stopped moving.  I completely disassembled it and oiled it.  Found no dirt or visible corrosion.   The headlight work consistently, but the loco won't run.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Rivarossi Heisler

Over in another post "Locos you want to see produced?" I had posted that I'd like to see a nice HO scale Heisler, and had mentioned that I wasn't interested in the Rivarossi Heisler.  Professor Klyzlr questioned why I wasn't interested in the Rivarossi model.  Since my opinion of the locomotive had been formed many years ago when the model was initially introduced, I decided to investigate the present state of the model before replying.
