My first weathered car using techniques featured on Trainmaster's TV

After watching weathering videos on Trainmaster's TV featuring Gary Christensen, Mike Confalone, and TSG, I weathered my first car using a mix of their techniques.

I chose to begin with a UP gondola which will be used in MOW service.  I figured if I went overboard, it could still look reasonable for MOW service.  Plus, gondolas usually look pretty junky.

I found the techniques and materials to be pretty forgiving and can be adjusted before sealing in dull cote.

Yesterday it was an Athearn Heavy Duty flat car

The main shipper on my layout receives and originate high wide loads. I will need lots of flat and schnabel cars to keep the loads moving. Some of these cars will have reporting marks for Charleston Heavy Lift, the operator of the port. There will also be General Electric and Westinghouse cars, and a few for Southern Railway, the home railroad.

The Athearn heavy duty flat car has always been one of my favorite commercially made freight car.  I have a bunch of them.  When I see one at a train show, or cheap on eBay I grab them.

Heat recovery steam generator flatcar loads

Now that the 66’ flat cars are done, they need loads.  The first ones will be heat recovery steam generators. The loads are made from Evergreen styrene, H, L and flat shapes, and the black insert is corrugated siding from JTT.

There are two sides, and the middle section of the load.

Here is a shot of one of the steam generators almost complete.

MV Products marker lights lenses: to peel or not to peel?

Good Evening:

I've purchased multiple packs of .052" MV Products clear lenses. For those not in the know, these are just about marker light or class light size lenses. I'm looking for tips on installing these.

Pre-ordered from 2 different shops

These long lead times for loco pre-orders combined with me getting older makes for model railroading fun.

LokSound CV54 Settings

I have always been pleased with Atlas locomotives, heavy, quiet, reliable.  Last week I took delivery of an Alco 420 with LokSound decoder.  Looks great, but very erratic, cutting in and out which then restarts the start procedure.  I've cleaned the track, wheels, not the problem.  In doing a web search I found a short video by ESU about tweaking the locomotive using CV54.  In the demonstration they are using a LokSound command station.

Tsunami2 vs. LokSound for authentic FM Train Master (H-24-66) sounds?

Good evening! I'm new to the MRH forums, but have found lots of terrific insight here, all for the price of a thunderstorm.

Proper angle for Walschert valve gear arm?

Walschert valve gear has a short arm connected to the main drivers.
When the drive rods are at the lowest point of their path, what is the correct angle for the valve gear arm?
Should it be slightly in front or behind the axle? [edited to indicate front of the locomotive]
