Locos and rolling stock

PRSL Locomtive Color

Working on an Athearn S-12 body to create a PRSL Baldwin switch engine, my plan is to letter it with an older Champ Decal set that spells out "Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines" across the long hood.  Honestly I am not sure of what the base body color should be, either PRR dark green locomotive enamel or the Reading's own witch's brew of paint.  All the PRSL locomotives I ever saw were so dirty, there was no real telling what the original color was.  Even the GP38's looked like a strange shade of black to my youthful eyes.  Thank you in advance fo

Wire for grab irons

What do you use to make grab irons and similar details in HO scale? And where do you get it?

I have used .015" piano wire for some things, but I find it very stiff. I have used brass wire for brake lines. It was good for items that did not have sharp curves. If I used brass for grab irons it usually broke when I made a sharp curve. I am now using some .010" phosphor bronze ( I may try some that is a little thicker). Phosphor bronze is not quite as stiff as I would like.

TTPX car number changes - ideas why?

I just received my ScaleTrains TTPX bulkhead flats.  While researching the exact cars I plan to model, I realized that many of the prototype cars have had their car numbers repainted into a standard (non-italic) font, while the alpha reporting marks themselves remain unchanged from their italicized factory font.

Here's an example of car with its factory number intact:

Best-running Shay?

I'd like to be able to have a logging or coal branch line on my future layout featuring a shay.

It doesn't fit with my target era, but the C&O did have 16 4-truck shays so I would be willing to wave my hands at the anachronism because its just something I want to have on the layout.

So I'd like, at some point, no urgency, to collect a shay. Preferably 4-truck, and either in HO or HO narrow gauge (HOn3 or 30, since I don't have any track or other narrow gauge yet, the loco can determine which).

very tiny screws.

well while working on a brass loco, one of the very tiny screws at the rear of the cab, just does not like having a screw driver touch it.

nothing stripped out, but the slot is not up to snuff. is there a source for these screws? and what size is this anyhow?

might be worth having a number of them as "extras" as my fat fingers have trouble holding and finding them. i just hope i do not drop one on the floor, (carpet).

yes i have a "holder/gripper" but these screws are way too small for it.

Loco Patch Out & Black Paint Fade

This is a multipart call for help. So I'd like to patch this loco out for my home road and fade the paint.

So do I do the paint fade first and then the patch out or the reverse of that procedure?

How do I get a good fade on black, we've all seen the ex PC locos that Conrail had they were almost gray?

And lastly I haven't decided on wether to do a complete patch out or fade the lettering to an almost unreadable state and put my reporting marks and number over those, what is the best way to fade out lettering/logos should I decide to do that?

How to paint the curve on this GE 80 tonner?

How could I reproduce the orange curve in this paint scheme?

Careful masking?  A decal overlay?  Freehand?

I purchased this image from ebay because I wanted to duplicate the paint scheme in HO scale. Here I cropped it  to show just the nose.

Shoving platform lights?

Hi all, I’m working on modifying a Walthers Trainline caboose into a shoving platform (it’s a low end model without window glass so why not plate the window holes over?).  Considering adding a decoder and lights also.

Question: what are lighting requirements or typical practice for shoving platforms?  Headlights, marker lights, etc. Have not found much definitive info on the inter webs.  Also any recommendations for how to accomplish adding lighting are appreciated.

Thx

Painting engines

Just pondering things.

  • Such as how hard is to paint engines
  • Best paint to use
  • And decaling

For example how hard would it be to replicate something like this?

Color matching different rail lines

Hi,

I model 7 yes seven different railroad lines. I’m currently trying to paint some of my own locomotive shells. But I am wondering if there is anyone who can help me with color matching. Here are my list of railroad lines:  Union Pacific, Sante Fe, Southern Pacific, Burlington, Chessie System, B&O and Rock Island. I do not want to get into air brushing just aerosol, ie rattled cans. Can anyone help me?
