Scenery and structures

SceniKing Roll-Outs

Does any one know if some one took over the SceniKing product line? Just looked at their website and it appears they stopped filling orders in 2015.

I'm looking for four of their M001s to string together.

Anyone know of similar backdrop products to  SceniKing where the bottom of the back drop image lines up nicely with the flat sub-roadbed and images like trees are lined up to scale at the front of the back drop?

Unloading grain from boxcars

Fresh out of HS in 1971, I worked at a local terminal grain elevator in Salina, KS.  Capacity, around 10 million bushels.  At that time, this elevator did a "boxcar" business of receiving grain by rail.  I didn't see many covered hoppers, but I saw tons of boxcars.  For several years I have tried to remember, let alone find, an example of how the grain was extracted from the boxcars.  I remembered that there was a twin screw auger that was inserted into the boxcar, and it traveled on rails, but beyond that, nothing.

Weathering Walls

Tonight I finished all the bracing/framing on the two portions of the grain elevator I'm working on. Tomorrow I'm planning on painting the exterior walls and then after that it's time to think about weathering

What is your preference for weathering? Do you prefer to weather after the walls have been glued together into the structure or before assembly?

Scratchbuilt bridge

Just finished up a scratchbuilt timber and steel trestle. 4 days worth of work, not too bad!

Concrete Block painting

I've found many, many articles on painting bricks but not much on painting concrete blocks.

I've found Tom Johnson's Feller's Garage post but his blocks end up being painted white and other colors. The weathering part is helpful though.

Unfortunately, walls don't look like this for every long:

They get stained, have white stains and the mortar ends up darker.

Show me your Grocery Distributor

I am planning to include a grocery distributor on my under construction Maine Central layout. I would love some good photos of prototype or model structures--especially those with multiple loading doors. I know about the Walthers kit which is a great model, but I'd love to consider other designs. I'm modeling the 1950's so nothing too modern. Can anyone give me some inspiration? Thanks!

Steam heat connections in a coach yard

My prototype had a small 3 track coach just South of the Centralia Passenger depot.  They had a boiler plant that provided steam heat to the passenger depot, the freight house and connections in the coach yard for layover passenger cars.

Clamps for assembling structures...

Hi all,

After 30+ years I finally have room to build a MRR. I haven't built a structure since working at Bobbye Hall's Hobby House in Dallas for customers back in the '90s. Wow! look at all of the tools, techniques, etc.

Can someone recommend any of the clamps as seen in the Micro-Mark catalog?

Many thanks,

Bob

p.s. many thanks to MRH for the acrylic paint book!

A few regional observations on cars, signs, parking, and other regional details

I'm always trying to keep my eye out for things to make a scene fit for its area, and thought I'd share a few notes.

Parking:  People don't park their cars at random, but look for the more desirable spots.  In New England, that usually means close to where they want to go.  I've noticed that, in Florida, "most desirable" very often isn't the closest, but the one with the most shade on a hot day.  Useful for modeling different regions.
