Scenery and structures
Let's see photos of the roofs on your structures
A couple of weeks ago I realized that as many photos that I take of my layout I almost always shoot from a low position to get the scale human's eye view. Everything tends to look more realistic and dramatic that way. But DUH! After all the work I put into building's roofs they pretty much disappear in the photos.
So here goes. Let's see some roof shots. Long shots and closeups....both welcome. Details and tips on the construction especially helpful.

Backdrop Image, string of coal cars
I'm looking for a good existing image, or a 'how to create' a good image of a string of coal cars fading off into the background. I'm locating my coal mine loading tipple very close to the backdrop, and I would wish for that backdrop to convey an image of 3 tracks of coal cars waiting to be loaded under the tipple, then exiting out into the layout space. I would like it to be a string of cars rather than dead end tracks.
I'm sure that there have been a number of other modelers that have sought the same, but I have yet to find such an image??

FREE Trees!!!
This is the time of year in New England and probably most of the USA that we should be harvesting all the free trees Mother Nature has given us. They are free for the picken. I’m no horticulturalist so don’t ask me the names of the weeds shown. I gather them while I’m photographing trains. Some of the best weeds grow along railroad tracks. I also use some of the flowers from the home landscape after they have dried up. A can of spray adhesive and some Woodland scenic foam can make some decent trees quickly. It took about two minutes to make the tree show.
Michaels Online Sale
What is better than 40% off one item at Michaels? How about 40% off your entire purchase? Some of you may have already seen this, but for those who haven’t, Michaels craft stores have been running online sales of 40% off your entire purchase. Some weeks it is 25% or 30% off, but most weeks since I first saw the sale, it has been 40%.

The value of a well placed tree
This scene at the upper edge of Meek's Canyon on the Black n' Blue features a couple of Canyon Creek Scenics conifers. I usually make my own trees but I've got a ton of detailing to do and I thought this area deserved a little splurge. Shout out to Pete for the great trees he made me! My tree is the obvious one sandwiched between two of Pete's.

The true secret to artistic success (Humor... or an attempt at it anyway)
I've decided to reveal the secret to successful artistic scenery. One can is good for one scene! Anyone can do it!
Sagebrush
Hi Folks: I'm Going to be modeling the area around Alamosa and walsenburg colorado, most of it is pretty scrubby and covered with sagebrush, which is known for a silver grey green appearance, what do you recommend using to reproduce that on my layout?
TIM
Kit, or scratchbuild?
Greetings!
I'm in process of building a Free-Mo module, just a 'scenic element' (straight, no industries), and while I've managed to catch the general feel of the area, I'd like to try getting a bit more 'prototypical' with a structure in the view. It's a farmhouse in the Hanover PA area, I've seen a couple here and there, but my attempts to find a kit that's even close have been for naught.
Yard ballast
I'm getting ready to ballast a small (three-track) HO yard. The prototype photos show black ballast, which I assume is mostly cinders. I have a bag of Arizona Arizona Rock & Mineral SP black cinder that is the color I'm looking for but it's not cheap for such a small bag. Are there any alternatives that look as good as ARM's product but is less expensive? I'm not adverse to using grout if the color and texture are close.

Bachmann Factory Plasticville Kitbash
I was going through the giant box of junk buildings I purchased for $20.00 and found an old Plasticville Bachmann Factory. Knowing that this kit suffers the same problem as all other 1960s and 1970s kits, (way too small tfor railcar service), I dug deep into all of those "someday" projects and I found a second Plasticville Factory. Yes, now we are doing something !
