Scenery and structures
Tie plate 4 or 8 hole
Which type are more common , this is purely for a scenic addtion to a yard area ('80s shortline) so just curious, as a websearch seems to show several variations in the number of holes. Incidently we call them chairs here in the UK and they are bolted to sleepers and hold down rail in 60ft lengths joined together with fishplates. Yes continuous welded rail is in common use now. Seems that only the gauge is the common link between us.

Any neat uses for train set bridges or trestles ???
Hey Gang,
I am working on,okay maybe more like "piddling with", some of those old train set "over and under" trestle bents. I have started to scrape the plastic with a razor saw to add wood grain and I have been refining some of the original molded pieces with appropriately sized and scraped styrene. Surprisingly, they are turning out pretty good.
i think i have a problem
i think i have a problem. i really like the BIG mountain scenery. i really enjoy seeing model trains snaking around large mountains and across large bridges. but my problem is that i cant seem to find much on the internet. ive seen a few great photos, like those of earl smallshaw (google him, great web page) and w.l. rogers' southern pacific's cascade line. but, there just doesnt seem to be that much out there. i like these for inspiration, im planning something similar for my modeling.

Trees! Of the Mike Rose variety in the May MRH issue
Anyone else notice the trees Mike Rose has used in his Kinter Milling article on the cover of the May MRH?
Very nice effect and a radical departure from the normal puff ball / SuperTree versions normally used for covering large background hills/mountains.
I'm very interested in his techniques.

Does plaster stick to styrene?
Having finally gotten around to making a mold for my bridge footings, I'm anxious to try it out. It's the first time I've made any sort of mold though besides a rock mold with latex rubber. I made it with plastic for a " For Sale" type sign which I assume is styrene. The plastic is soft enough to lightly score with a knife and snap. I'd like to use the mold more than once so I wonder if I will be able to get the casting out without tearing up the mold. Will the plaster stick to the mold? Should I use a release agent like wet water or maybe some crisco?

Paper Model Software
I while back I saw a site and didn't bookmark it.
It was a site or software download, i can't remember, that allowed you to take a photo of your house for example, then allowed you to measure your front door or windows for scale height and it would assist you in making a paper 3d model you can use to start scratch building out of wood (Or just keep it as a paper model if you want)
Any ideas or help from the community?

Silflor...balls
Got the Binford Grass-whatever ion-3000 fired up (a custom-built ion-grass raiser thingy, based upon design and materials from MRH and this forum, thank you VERY much!) and using Silflor in various lengths...only problem is the 'balls' of material in the bag have to be pulled apart to effectively use the static-grass aparatice.
Sure I'm not the only one experiencing this, what do you do to get rid of the balls and just get the grass?

Bluffs vs mountains
My HO-scale scenery will depict the bluffs around the Meramec RIver about 80 miles SW of St. Louis, and its surrounding bluffs. This is an area I almost yearly (for the last 15 years) camp at and canoe down, so I have plenty of pics and some video of many excursions for ideas.
