Need help with asphalt roads & parking lots

Hello everyone,

Since I am not very pleased with my latest attempt at the parking lot or more like the unloading lot for my intermodal terminal, I have decided (after thinking about it for most of the night!) to redo it!

I was wondering if someone would know of a good tutorial to make old asphalt (or new asphalt too... for another project!) look, well... old and used! :-)

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Limestone block material for structures

What would be a good material to simulate limestone block with "natural" rough texture (not smooth block)?

For example, this train station (CNoR station in Thunder Bay) has 3 rows of block at the foundation, as well as some decorative elements.

need advice on modeling this building

This is an image on Stgeve Klezyck's (Rattled's) photobucket site.  It is a building in Weed, CA.  I want to selectively compress it to about 6" tall to the eaves and 24" long or so.  It will sit up against my backdrop on my HO layout.  I will model it to the roof peak (about 4" deep).

Shapeways.com 3d printed stuff

This is an ice cream store I built using a pill bottle and parts I designed and had printed at shapeways.  You can see how I did it at nvrr49.blogspot.com.  The sign was printed on an Afina printer.  For more details, click on this link, http://nvrr49.blogspot.com/2013/08/ice-cream-store-made-from-pill-bottle.html

Acohol, Soap, and Scenery

In the interest of having accepted practices in one place, I ask the following questions.  Naturally, there are many ways to do the same job.  In your experience, what are your recommendations for the following?

ALCOHOL:

Use denatured alcohol to clean castings before painting/gluing/etc. This makes sense.
Use iso-alcohol to mix with glue to set scenery.

What would happen if you use denatured alcohol with glue? Does it really matter and why? IOW, what's the difference when it comes to our use in scenery?

bent support

HO scale- I have a run over un-even terrain/dry creek bed, and plan on scratch-built bents and bridge track to cover a 1-foot section (give or take an inch).  Scratch-built stringers, ties, the works.  My base is 2" foam w/out plywood.

Basswood structures with cast iron accesories...

So, as the title hints, I have several structures right now that I am looking to start building. The main question i have for all ya'll structure builders...what kind of glue do you find works best for gluing wood and metal together?

scrap yard stuff

Guys,

So, if you're like me, there is a never ending supply of shavings, scraps of styrene beams, remnants of kitbashes, etc. available to model a scrapyard. The question I have is how long is a particular piece of scrap held? In other words, I am looking at a photo that I found on a google search. In the photo are a pair of SDP40s in Amtrak paint. No doubt there are boilers and other aged junk in the yard. So, assuming the boilers are from railroad locos, is it possible that they have sat there for 25-30 years?

Detail parts for interlocking

I am getting ready to install a crossing at grade with another railroad and will have an interlocking tower. Plans are to detail the with non-working rodding to signals and one switch and lock. I am familiar with prototype systems but haven't had much luck finding US-style detail parts in HO. I have found a few suppliers in the UK but they use square piping and the pipe and bellcrank stands are not US design. I could possibly use the bellcranks from UK but would have to scratch the other fittings. I would rather not have to mess with ordering from overseas.

Small Town Car Dealerships in the 1920's

I'm laying out the downtown for a small 1920's Maine town.  I'd like to have a car and truck dealership--any idea how big a town would be needed for a new car showroom at the time?  That seems like a good use for the team track--the occasional shipment of new cars.

Downtown (plus the wrong side of the tracks) will have a few stores, a coal dealer, and likely an agricultural dealer as well.  The boxing gym will be a bit anachronistic, perhaps, but is a tribute to some good friends--and a celebration of an important part of my life.
