H0 Layout: Logging at the Turn of the 20th Century

Hello!

Last year I had to dismantle my previous layout, Steam Era. You can see it here:

Michael Rose's tree flocking - Videos and a visit

Yesterday was my birthday (August 28th) and I had a wonderful day with the highlight being a visit to Michael Rose’s home to see the progress on his layout along with details on finishing his excellent twisted wire trees.  The Mrs. and I started the day with a ride on the new Sunrail commuter train to the DeBary station near Michael’s home.  He was waiting for us when we arrived (on time!) and took us the short distance to his home.

Our first stop was his layout where I took a couple pictures:

When did hurricane roof vents and wood pallets first come into use?

Recently I got a structure which comes with hurricane roof vents and pallets like you'd move with a forklift.

I model the year 1943. When did they start using these vents or pallets like that? I spent a lot of time online trying to find the history of each with no luck...

D&RGW Narrow Gauge Ballast

I was thinking of using Arizona Rock and Mineral #3002 for my mainline and #1152 for the yard and other less used track... any opinions or what have the rest of you used...

CA glue for wood laser kits

I have begun to construct one of the laser cut wood structures. I started to glue the corners of the 2 story building with ca. Thin ca, thick ca, medium ca are all a year old plus but some have not been opened until now. They either take an inordinate amount of time to cure or the don't cure at all Then they snap apart at the joint subsequent applications don't cure well either. I fell like I've got a train wreck in the making.

Am I using the right adhesive for this thin wood? If not what should I use?

Using leveling sand for ballast?

After reading Mike Confalone's Allagash story and seeing his scenery techniques I was inspired to try some of his techniques for myself.

Since I already had leveling sand from a previous patio project I decided to mix up some ballast using two different colors that I had to try and model the ballast used on the P&LE.

The mix actually came out very well and resembles the light limestone ballast of the P&LE. I was having a hard time finding a commercially produced ballast that was the right color and scale for HO.

Preserving Unused CA Glue

What's the secret to preserving unused CA glue, or is there one? I decant a small amount for use and immediately reseal the tube and place back in the plastic container and replace the top. I still can't seem to keep it longer than 2-3 weeks before it begins to set up in the tube. Any advice?

HO Steam Era Layout

Hello all!

I'd like to present my HO scale layout. Firstly I must say that it's already been taken apart due to several reasons, which will be discussed a bit later.

Some facts:

Windows in the New River Mine kit

I don't like the windows in the New River Mining kit.

I've tried Sharpies, paint markers, etc with mixed results.

I also think that the stock windows are recessed too far back.

Has anyone found a replacement window from another manufacturer that fits?

Any ideas out there?

thanks.

Trying to make trees (again)

I've tried to make my own deciduous trees in several ways and so far never liked my results good enough for the foreground of the layout. Today I had an idea so I tried again smiley

For this test I made a simple armature from stranded wire I had lying around:
