Scenery and structures

Not what I expect to have to do

So, for a while I have been working on a scratch built church.  1 of the items I have thought I had a bead on was adding stained glass windows.  Well, over the last 3 days, I have learned "not so fast".

Step 1 was to find photos of such windows on the internet and copy them to my hard drive.

Step 2 was to resize the windows I finally chose to the opening size in the window frames.  (Note that there are 4 different size windows, 3 done with the casts and 1 done custom by me.)

Lead Weights as a building aid

I posted about these on another topic and some one asked for more details so here goes.   They are made from pieces of aluminium 1" x 1" square section tube cut in my case to lengths of either 100mm (4") or 200mm (8").

Background painting

Some of you guys will remember that I tried my hand at painting to see if I could produce an acceptable backdrop for my Richlawn Railroad.  I wasn't able to produce the quality I wanted so I ended up using a printed backdrop by Backdrop Junction which I really like.  Although I couldn't get the results I wanted, I got bitten by the "painting bug".  Over the years I've enjoyed watching painting shows like Bob Ross and his "wet on wet" technique using oils.  I purchased some how-to painting videos by painter Wilson Bickford along  with

What is this track structure?

Go here in Google Maps: 45.667921, -110.554249

That's the MRL in Livingston MT.

What are the heavy lines in the tracks on either side of the shops, the one side of the shops and the servicing area. This is not unique here as I've seen them elsewhere but there are lots here. Google Earth, if you have it, lets you get closer. There are still regular ties in there.

I thought maybe they were raised areas or areas with inspection pits. Then I thought new ties but some areas have them exactly in line track to track.

Corrugated metal

I have built the Walters structure under construction and to add some realism to it I need to add some corrugated metal between the beams which would be prototypical of high rise construction. The metal is the foundation for pouring of cement. So my question is where can I get some strips of corrugate aluminum or what can I use to simulate metal. Years ago Campbell had packets of strips of metal but I have not seen those in years. Any suggestions would be appreciated.   thank you

Old-school scratchbuilding

When I was in my teens - early '60s, I built my first model railroad layout with the help of my uncle, who was a professional photographer, railfan and modeler. He introduced me to the hobby, and I have many fond memories of our friendship.

Diamond Coal Company kit from Walthers

I've been away from the hobby for a bit, so I was surprised to see that Walthers finally did a 'new' coal tipple. Has anyone bought the little beast yet and what do you think of it?

Static grass between the ties

I was planning on applying static grass to the center of my track on some industrial spurs.  Is there a way to do this without having it stick to the ties?  Grass growing out of wood doesn't look very realistic.  The only thing I can think of is to scrape the grass off the ties after it has dried with a small screw driver blade.

What was going through my mind - modern Alberta Granary

I started this modern granary structure almost ten years ago from plans in MR - February 2002.  At one point almost a decade ago, I decided I wouldn't be able to use this structure on my layout so I ceased and desisted from any scratch building.  I had the main building up and some of the detail work at the train entrance, which you can't really see in this pic.
