HO Gas Meters and Electrical Service Weatherheads

I am detailing a contemporary Rix/Pikestuff metal building kit in HO. Recently I saw some castings of gas meters. Can't find them at LHS or Walthers or usual detail casting sources, and didn't bookmark the website. Anyone else see this?

Alternatively, any ideas on scratchbuilding the gas meter and electrical service weatherhead?

Thanks,

Dixon

Making Trees

Howdy Folks. I've been reviewing quite a few model Railroading video's and info on building layout scenery and trees trying to get back up to date on things again. I see a lot of excellent info on the subjects from a lot of great people with lots of great ideas. one of my winter projects is to try and make trees for my layout. The only problem is that store bought trees for model railroads are not cheap and they only come with a few in a bag.

Scratch building

I've had a major scratch building project on my to-do list for several years, but don't know how to start.  The project is an HO representation of a sawmill my Dad owned from the 30' to the 70's.  The challenge is that I only have 2 photographs of it, both from an angle.  I haven't figured out how to determine scale measurements from an angled view.  I seem to remember an article covering this subject many years ago in one of the paper mags, but no longer keep back issues.  I think the subject might be perfect for a future MRH issue.  Thanks

Josie Olina Mercantile

My first attempt at a scratch built Mercantile with Greenhouse

Where is Scott Mason and his podcast?

Scott Mason has disappeared along with his great structure building and MRR radio show.

Does anyone know what became of him and his cast of favorites?

Will there be anymore shows or has he gone to the great freight yard in the sky ?

Miss the shows a lot.

Sand, flaws, fill, sand, sand, pits, fill, sand....

If you understand the title of this thread then you must be a kit basher or scratch builder.  I still don't have this whole sanding thing down to create flawlessly smooth surfaces.  I have three fillers, Squadron Green putty, Tamiya white putty and Mr. Hobby 1500 liquid fill; they are all new.

How do you achieve a realistic look for cinders?

I am in need of a good method or product for representing cinders in and around the steam loco shops areas on my HO layout.

The Woodland Scenics product is too black, I glued it in place, and found it so dark that I came back and hit it with my airbrush and, if I recall, Polly Scale UP dark gray paint.  The dark gray is about the right color, but now the cinders just look exactly like what they are... spray-painted dark cinders.  Ugh.

I am looking for what I would call a dark gray with some hint of brown.

Thanks for your ideas!

Looking for recent magazine article

Sometime in the past year there ws an article on kitbashing a Walthers McGraw Oil business. Maybe a conversion to an ethanol company? The McGraw kit is 4 vertical tanks with a concrete catch basin around it. The article halved it to two tanks and bashed the concrete basin to hold just the two tanks.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I don't need the article, just the issue/date. I was thinking MR. Thanks.

DIY static grass applicator

G'day,

I spent the last week or so putting together a how-to video on building a static grass applicator. There are plenty of resources on the web but I thought I'd try putting something together, it's not the cheapest, it's hard to beat the fly swatter for price, but it is very effective.

I've tried the commercial applicator that costs nearly $190, and in comparison I felt I got the same results using my home made version.

Your advise please on embedding tracks for Palmer Bldg on the Richlawn RR

I am at the point that I need to think about embedding the tracks inside of the Palmer building and need your advice as I've never done this before.  I want just the rail heads to be visible and look like they are set in the concrete floor.  I've heard of people coating the tracks with plaster or Sculptamold and then rolling a junk car through it while still wet to provide wheel flange clearance.  I've also heard that instead of rolling a car through the wet material that spacers (styrene?) are first put in and then removed just before the material hardens.
