Scenery and structures

Dying size all rope with paint?

I’ve got some 4 millimeter sisal fibers and I want to dye green and try to use them for flocking.  I have watched a few videos, but what is the best way to mix that hobby lobby/ michaels  folk art paint and then stir it into the fibers?

I am worried about it clumping right away and not being able to pull the fibers apart while it dries.

What is your paint the water ratio and do you use a drop of dishwashing liquid?

Printing building fronts

Been watching Jason Jensen videos. In the "Building a City Street Scene" episode, he shows at the 30:00 mark how after building a wall from a kit (painted, weathered, windows completely) he downloads a scan to his computer and from there makes color corrections etc. then glues onto cardstock and can customize structures to fit available spaces. I'm a computer idiot (71 y.o) but asking for suggestions as to how this is best accomplished with regards to good programs and/or  tutorials as how to get started.

Scenery in Staging?

I’ve been thinking (against my better judgment) that it would be nice to have some rudimentary scenery in my staging area and hidden track. Security cameras, and maybe onboard cameras, will allow me to enjoy watching a train traverse through large portions of my layout that will be otherwise hidden. This area, in particular, would be neat to have the cliffs to the right side that the prototype traversed up a valley to the fields above.

Need scenicking ideas for this spot; update.

I'll be putting grass everywhere this shot up to the edges of the banks. but this spot next the the trailer, I'm encountering a creative block. A dried out pond? Brush? A pile of junk?

Peco static grass not working.

Peco static grass not working.

It keeps clumping up and won't go through screen of grass applicator.

Try to un clump it in the coffee grinder and it still clumps up.

Break it up with fingers and it still clumps up in grass applicator.

Put a little rock in the grass applicator and it still clumps up and won't go through the screen.

Rework of the chemical plant in Cantwell

I know these two images are oriented differently from each other

But watcha think?

Engine facility structures associated with oil burning steam locos

Want to include whatever scenic elements apply to the engine servicing yard for an oil burning steam loco.  I've searched around on the web and found pictures/structures of the stand pipe for fueling the tender.  However, are there more elements associated with the servicing equipment (e.g., where the oil is stored; how it is pumped; how it is conveyed to the fueling stand pipe).  Photos of a prototype yard would be most beneficial.

Grain Elevator Clearance Question

Good morning,

I have a question about clearance from the wall(s) of two buildings to the rail on the siding.

These HO scale buildings are getting lights and final placement on the layout today, hopefully, and I'm wavering on exact placement. Google search has offered up no dimensions.

We're set in 1973, the locos are GP-7 or U-23-B. Grain is in covered hoppers or a couple of old boxcars.

Scratch Building Material Question

Good morning,

I am laying out the next project which is going to require scratch building several mill structures at my steel plant.

I am looking to make a long cast house foundation, foundation for stoves and gas cleaning, and also the forms for the walls and roof over the cast house.

I was thinking 3/4 MDF, but am aware that MDF can have issues with moisture and possible problems related to adhesives when joining styrene siding and roofing material to the MDF itself.

Old Wood Structure Kits, (also other materials)

I was rummaging around some of my inventory of collected 'stuff' a few days ago, and came upon a few old wood kits that probably would not get many modern day modelers very excited. But they just might appeal to some older, time-period guys. It might be neat to see a few of these odd ball kits from yesteryear.

And it might be neat to find a modeler who would appreciate getting them free, rather than languishing unused in another person's 'collected stuff'? Might be fun to find a good home for some of these.
