Hairspray (or other chipped paint) techniques?
Has anyone here used the hairspray weathering technique when modelling steel structures or vehicle or trains?
I recently discovered the technique and would like to see if anyone has their results to post.
Interesting grain elevator and location plus observations on research
If you are looking for prototypes to model or emulate, Google maps satellite and street views come in handy. As many know, the street view is not necessarily going to give you the same thing as the "satellite" (often flyover) image. In many places, the satellite image is updated every several years. However, the street view may a) not exist at all, or b) be as many as 13 years out of date and very poor quality imagery. If you're following a rail line that parallels a road (highway) you may come upon industries that you're interested in.
Width of portals too narrow?
I have bought 2 HO double track portals from 2 different reputable manufacturer. They both measure an opening of 108mm.
But NMRA RP-7.1 says the clearance should be at least 112mm (4*28mm) for Classic and Early Modern Era, and a whopping 124mm (4*31mm) for Modern Era, which I'm modeling.
Why are the portals too narrow according to the NMRA RP 7.1? The portals are clearly applicable to the Modern Era.
how to build walthers Cornerstone centennial mills model 933-3160
I purchased the Walthers Cornerstone centennial mills model 933-3160. At first I thought it would be a pretty straight up build but now I'm confused. I don't under what is meant by a "right or left" hand building or why there are 2 building fronts. I get the narrowing part but that's about all.

Dead Pine needles?
I have finally made some pine and fir trees. I would like to have some realistic groundcover underneath the pine trees. I used dark green fine foam for the Scots Pines and used 7mm static grass (eventually painted brown with dark green foam added) as with needles.
Can I dye the static grass dark reddish brown etc?
Brush streaks when using craft paints
I'm experimenting with brushing craft paints on styrene. I diluted it with a brush dipped in ArmorAll glass cleaner, then picked up some paint on the brush and applied to the styrene. The brush strokes are very apparent. Any suggestions as to how I can brush on craft paint without streaking?

Flock Material Falling Off Trees
I am in the process of making trees for my layout. I am using Woodland Scenics metal tree armatures and Woodland Scenics clump foliage material. First I applied Hob-e-tac glue to the tree armatures and let it dry until it turns clear as recommended, then I apply the clump foliage material making sure that it adheres to the glue. The trouble that I am having is that the foliage material begins falling off in small pieces after a few days as if the tree was losing its foliage in the fall time. My question is, has anyone experienced a similar situation, and if so what the remedy was?
How to stiffen the fabric they give you for fencing
Hi People, I need help again if possible.
I recently purchased Walther's electrical sub-station and with the kit comes a fabric similar to wedding tulle. Do any of you have any thoughts on how to make the fabric a little more rigid to facilitate installing it on the fence.
I have tried starch but it doesn't work very well so I'm open to suggestions. Thanx Steve Klein

I'm planning to model wind
I'm thinking about modelling wind as just another aspect on my layout. I'm thinking in a town or valley area and I've marked out items this should work well a person reading a newspaper, bushes trees, flags washing on a line etc.
I'm doing trials a the moment and how I'm going manage air flow around the layout to certain spots.
Murky/muddy shallow waters
I'm looking for ideas on modelling murky water.
I'd love to see what model railroaders have come up with.
I've been exploring mediums to do this and so far only one has caught my eye on youtube.
