Dullcoat as primer
The instructions for my Campbell Scale Models barn suggested using Dullcoat as a primer on the aluminum roof. While I haven't painted the roof, yet anyway, it got me thinking. I have a plastic kit where the paint is not bonding well, and thought about using Dullcoat to prime the plastic
A first experiment seemed to work, but I am not sure. Does anyone have experience using Dullcoat as a clear primer?
Inexpensive paint mixing palettes
Discovered" a great palette for mixing paints - plastic egg holders. I'm finding more and more egg containers that hold the eggs in 12 clear plastic "cups." The top and bottom sides are like a clamshell, and each are identical. One covers the upper half of the egg and the other, the lower half.
Take the eggs out and cut the two holders off the carton. Now you have twenty-four egg size palette's for mixing paints.

Good afternoon,

Best grey color for galvanized steel?
While driving home today in the country, I was taken by how many things are made from galvanized steel. Especially grain bins and guardrails. It is a particular dull grey. What color paint do you prefer to represent galvanized weathered steel?
Grade Crossing Signal Location
So I have a road that crosses three tracks, one being the mainline and the other two are short sidings. Would a grade crossing signal only be used to protect the mainline or all three tracks? If it would only be used to protect the mainline would the signal be placed outside all three tracks or just the mainline?
Evans Model Builder Software
Hey all I got the Evans Designs Model Builder software for Christmas and have been playing around with it. Curious if there are others out there who are using it and your thoughts on best practices, and whether there are any places on line were you can share files?
Thanks,
Steve
Painting Balsa Wood (As much as I hate to ask ...)
I've got a dilemma. There doesn't seem to be a can (or three) of pure white acrylic model spray paint on the North American continent. I'm looking for others to share their experiences with painting balsa with spray paints other than acrylic.

Tracks in parks and cemeteries
Gang,
I am looking for some unique pics. I want to model two things. First, I want tracks either on one border or bisecting a public park. Second, I want a different scene where tracks do the same thing with a cemetery. I know there are plenty of examples such as the Indianapolis line passing Symmes Park in Hamilton, Ohio. I also vaguely remember a line in Green Bay, Wisconsin that either went through a cemetery or very close to one.
This picture is from Nashville, Tennessee.

Using sifted cement as ground cover in a Cement Plant
I am going to model part of a very big cement plant (Lehigh, Union Bridge) and I have the track laid and I am currently building the structures. Judging from my research, it is apparent that many parts of cement plants are pretty much covered in cement dust. While in Home Depot, I noticed all of the fine spilled cement on the floor and started thinking that it might work as ground cover for this area.
