DPM N Scale Grout Line Painting Test
I am looking for an alternative method of painting grout/cement joint lines on brick walls. This is a 1st try on a extra wall piece.
I used a light grey craft paint, spreading it on with a brush and wiped it off with a paint rag picked up at Lowes. It is not a wash cloth texture. Clear spots are from where I pushed down with my finger. I need a bit of a lighter touch.
Anyway looking for good, bad or ok job and or whatever comments you care to make.
Thanks, Jack

PLA soldering - maybe new technique?
I've been looking around to see if anyone is doing this and I haven't seen it yet, so thought maybe I'd share. I'm big into designing and 3D printing parts for layout structures, especially where things are more or less modern such as steel building parts, etc. So recently I've been working on a grain cooperative structure. I'd made quite a few parts in 3D printed PLA material (the "corn starch" filament), and noticed that it's much easier to print things relatively flat and "fold them up", versus printing taller and removing

Earth base paint color
Does anyone have a good shade of brown paint to use on foam board to represent a soil color. I realize that their many variations of soil color lot depending on the part of the country that one lives. This will be in the Midwest (Indiana) and there will be some grass and other details added.
Colour for Storefronts
Hallo,
I need some information about "standard" colours for wooden "false" storefronts.
I have on my workbench Bachmann's Pink Lady Boutique and the Main Street Apothecary.
Both kits seem to be rather on the scale side, but the colours are looking plastic and artificial.
Which colours would you recommend as typical for these type of buildings?

Shale as ballast
I have a source of crushed shale. I was thinking of using this for ballast. Does shale have any properties that could cause electrical shorts?
A question about cardstock
I recently bought two packages of cardstock, both from Walmart.
The first is their Astrobrights line, supposedly 65 lb. The sheets are .008" thick.
The second is Pen + Gear (in the yellow package), described as 110 lb Premium Card Stock. It, too, is .008" thick.
As far as I can tell the two are identical.
I bought the 65 lb material because I wanted something lighter than the 110 lb, but that's not what I got. Could someone explain to me just what's going on?

Animating a Wood Chip Truck Dumper
Hello All,
I've been modelling a paper mill in HO Scale (details of which can be found my blog) based in part on three prototype facilities in Maine, where I've had hands-on experience in switching operations.
Of the three prototypes, perhaps the mill in Rumford, Maine boasts the most striking structural form.

Atlas Truss Bridge
I have this Atlas Truss Bridge. There are some slots on top as if it was designed for horizontal girders. Is this something available, or should I try and make my own? I know I could not do better than the existing girders on the kit.

Flat Car Bridges
In road work we often use retired flat cars for bridges. Either temporarily, or as more permanent solutions in certain areas. I would like to incorporate a flat car bridge on my layout, but I can not recall having seen modelers use flat car bridges on layouts. So, I am just looking for examples of flat cars used as vehicle bridges on a layout.
Masonite/hardboard Fascia Backdrop Seams - Best Practices, Informal Survey
Hi everyone,
I'm currently in the process of putting up the backdrop for my layout. I'm farther along than in this photo and hope to be done framing and mounting the backdrop in the next week or so.
