WHO? The manufactures of DCC throttles.

Dead rail — pros and cons

Okay, dead rail is often mentioned like it’s some kind of model railroading silver bullet. Rather than be so romantic about dead rail, let’s talk about the REAL pros and cons.

What is it about dead rail that is seen as such a benefit? And let’s get beyond the hype ... can you really never attach any feeders ever to a dead rail layout? And let’s hear from more than the dead rail wanna-bees, let’s hear from actual dead rail users! Is less wiring really the only advantage?

Installing a No Halt Keep Alive in HO Atlas with Sound

Hi, I hope someone can help me out.  I have a couple of fine HO Atlas Geeps (GP38-2 Atlas Master Series and GP39-2 Atlas Trainman), both with factory installed DCC and sound.  I would like to install a couple of No Halt Insurance units since both cut out over a few problem areas on my layout.  The instructions say to solder the blue wire of the No Halt to the Common + voltage of the decoder and the negative wire to the negative supply of the decoder.  I think I have successfully soldered the blue wire to the hole on the decoder marked COM + but I can't identify where

Hi All

I am not at all as knowledgeable on DCC as I would or should be in DCC but as I inch closer to getting into seriously doing some operating on my layout, I find the need starting to rise to the top.

Hopefully I can make my question understandable, My wife often tells me I don't make myself clear enough so here goes.

This is a list of items I have to operate and program locomotives:

DCC musings

So, I guess this might turn into a rant, but I'd prefer it to just be a discussion and perhaps someone with knowledge that I don't have can educate me. Its a bit all over the place, but then, so am I laugh

soldering flux

do you need to use flux to solder nickle silver rails together?
Thank you.

Toggle switch to power on DCC

I would like to mount a switch on my fascia to power on my DCC system. Should I get a toggle switch the runs from the DCC power pack to my surge protector or between the wall and my surge protector. I would think the switch should be mounted on the supply line from the DCC pack to the surge protector. Would a simple 12v toggle switch be sufficient?

Maybe a dumb DCC question?

I often run my layout alone but wondered a couple of things if I ask someone to join me to take a throttle.

1) If a throttle is set to the same loco address, do they both control it or is it stolen?

2) If the above is true then is it possible to have an Arduino send a global command to all engines? For example, an emergency stop.

My concern is that a novice may be running a train and makes a mistake. It would be nice to take control or have a trigger to safeguard tail tracks that go into the oblivion.

DCC Rant

Ok So I have a quick rant. The sound decoder offer got me thinking. That is a nice deal for folks to trade out the older decoders in their rosters. Great deal. However it does nothing for a guy like me that doesn't own a DCC system or anything with a decoder. I have looked at systems. Even thought about Building one with an Arduino Mega. Then Looked at the cost of adding Decoders to all my locos and just can't justifiy the cost. By the way I model in N Scale. I can't even take any of my stuff to the Local Club I am thinking of joining because it is PURE DCC.
