Shinohara DC turnouts for DCC use

I have some code 100 Shinohara curved turnouts as well as code 83 Walthers turnouts, all with the solid metal bar on the points - pre-DCC friendly version.

I have read that there are a number of things you can do on the older turnouts to make them DCC friendly.  One of them apparently involves getting rid of the metal bar that the points are fused to, so they are not connected electronically.

That said, I was watching Rob Spangler's layout video and AFAIK, he runs DCC and the turnouts seemed to have the metal bar still intact on a number of turnouts visible.

Changing Rail Code

Hi Folks

I am planning to change the code of my rail -- I've been using code 55, and I am planning to go to the much more commonly available code 80.  My only question is how to make the transition between the two types of track.  I would really like to hear how this can be easily accomplished

Thanks

Rail connecters look fairly ugly

Rail connecters look fairly ugly and shouldnt be in highlighted showcase areas. Does anyone have a suggested workround or other option so it's not seen. Most places you get away with it. After spending a lot of time getting my ties right I got this big ugly metal thing sitting in prime view. Please help. James B

replacing pc with wood ties on hand laid turnouts?

i recently built a curved turnout.   first time i built a turnout on the bench.  used just a handful of PC ties.

when glueing down the wood ties, i left gaps for the pc ties.  I saw that the pc ties weren't as perpendicular to the rails as the wood ties were and i often needed to leave out 2 wood ties.

Wire used in layout wiring-where do you get it from?

I just spent an hour stripping wire to use for my feeder wires (22 ga. solid core) and it got me to thinking about where I got mine and where do other people get theirs.

Hand laid switch shorting problem

Hi Folks:

I have a hand built switch that I am having some issues with. I built it on a paper template from fast-tracks, and the train seems to follow it ok, the problem is that when the front wheel of the truck crosses the frog isolation gap on the diverging route, someplace it causes a short.  I'm having a hard time figuring out where and what to do about it -- can someone please suggest a solution for me?

thanks

Relay Shield or Motor Shield

Greetings,

I am writing to ask about the difference between a Relay Shield and the Motor Shield for my newly constructed Arduino Uno DCC++ base station.

Here is an image of the Relay Shield:

HO scale Rail Chief tool ?

Hey group,

I got this tool in a lot recently...  It is for hand spiking track, I believe, but I am not sure how to use it. The pins on the punch go into the steel blocks that have slots for proper rail gauge. Beyond that, I have no idea how to properly use this thing. Anyone know? It might have been made by Varney, so I am sure it is quite old.

Anybody have experience with LocoFi?

I see WIFi Model Railroad has banner ads (for LocoFi) on the forums. Sounds interesting, almost to good to be true. I think having only a smart phone app as a throttle is an issue. I have a ProtoThrottle that I really, really like. I don't know if Iowa Scaled Engineering can come up with a way to connect to LocoFi. How is this compared to the Ring Engineering system? Lots of questions.

Multiple Arduinos on a lap top, with JMRI

Two issues.

Was using Windows XP, but moved to Linux Mint. (Tried both, but still same issues)
