(Colorado) Great Western Operating Session

I invited five members of the Medford, Oregon “Rogue Valley Model Railroad Club” to attend an operating session on January 8, 2017.  It was a very successful operation so I thought I would document it with photos of the action in the next comments. Sorry, no video.

Operations on the UPSF Joint Line

This is the HO layout I help work on every week at a friends house.

This layout has been under construction for over 8 years now. The owner often reminds us, that "it's the group's layout, he's just the lucky guy who lives there."

Berlin, 1929. January 11, first steps.

I made an attempt at this a few years ago, and had it anchored to my ceiling with the intention that it should be raised and lowered as needed. The result was that if it was lowered it stayed down, and if raised, was forgotten.

Winter Break 2016-17 Progress

Well, with this year's winter break coming to a close, it's about time to share an update of the progress I've made on my layout. Granted, my layout has no physical existence quite yet. My depiction of the Long Island Rail Road in February of 2014 has yet to take on any benchwork or even a track plan, so there is only a handful of projects I can work on. Space is the issue here; I can work on pretty much anything that can be easily stored. So while I've been home from college, I've essentially been working on more weathering projects.

I decided to get back into the mix and review some laser cut wood kits. The first is a real nice craftsman kit. But as they say, don't take my word for it. See for yourself. In this video I review Carolina Craftsman kits version of the Plaisto Post Office.

The other post in the forum was supposed to be on my blog. Instead I will link that post here Carolina Craftsman kit build

Not bad for a month's work.

I guess it shows the benefit of thinking out an idea for a long time. Just a mere five weeks ago it was an unused basement corner, now it almost looks like a layout.

Then:

Before

And now:

After

Splines almost done.

The splines are almost done. They still need to be sanded and re-leveled, but it actually looks like something resembling a railroad. You can see the 20" radius curves made using the form jig. They need to be cut and fit into place, too.

Benchwork.

'The rolls of kraft paper have the full size track plans for reference as I put the splines in.
