Traveling some of the NG Circle May 2020

After being cooped up in my home for months (literally been off my job since March 7th) I decided I had enough and would venture to my small humble shabin (shed/cabin) in Colorado.  Sitting round left me a lot of time to read about my favorite railroad and longed to see some of the real sites along the RGS right away. I planned several excursions and this is a little of what I was able to see.  I will try to give some new/ old photos as well.

Grade crossing, switching and horn

I have a question about some detail of proto ops - given a situation where a grade crossing has to be crossed while switching.

In case the locomotive is pulling their cut of cars it's obvious - the engineer will have to sound the horn before crossing the street as usual.

But if the locomitive is pushing the cars, let us say 10 cars, and no shoving platform is in use?

South Carolina caboose condos

South Carolina's Williams-Brice stadium has a collection of expensive cabooses for football fans.  No expense was spared for these very deluxe units.

Model Railroading between the Transition Era and the Staggers Act - who's buying all those second Gen units?

In the discussion of the ProtoSteam throttle project, while discussing how large a market there might be for such a controller, AlexW made the following comment:

"Most of the activity that I see in terms of people building layouts and on Facebook, YouTube and the like is post- Staggers act. There seems to be a gap in-between the Transition era and the Staggers Act that few like to model, and then it really picks up again."

English Railway and Its Origin (History of the British Railway)

Presentation:

In 1602, there apparently existed a railroad in Nottinghamshire in England. In spite of the fact that it isn't checked and is bantered by different students of history yet the cause of the English Railway can be followed back from that period. By sixteenth century cable car streets were being utilized. The principal open railroad was the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825. This railroad moved the two travelers just as cargo.

IAIS's West End - Saving (cab) face - DONE

My recent work on IAIS GP8 481 had an unintended benefit:  It provided a surplus IC orange, frog-eye-equipped nose from the Intermountain GP10 that I could use to model the scene in the Erik Rasmussen pic below, with the last remains of GP8 7976 languishing in the weeds near the Bluffs enginehouse:

How Gresley's A4 Pacifics became the World's Fastest Steam Engines

A really good video presentation in reference to British railroad development. Can't wait to show this to my '90 year old british neighbor' that lived as a kid at a major crossing gate as these trains entered and left London during WWll.

It's really nicely done.
