Athearn, SoundTraxx, and TCS WOWDiesel, Oh My!
Some of you might remember me drooling over the pre-production Genesis GP39-2 models that Athearn announced and had on display at the 2015 NTS in Portland, OR. Three of the first run were decorated for Portland & Western, the prototype railroad I model (with modifications....).
I was pretty much
Comfortably noob in the MRR vortex.
“How did you spend your weekend?” asked one friend of mine at the work. “Nothing special, among other things i was watching videos in the youtube about RR modeling” I said. “And?” he insisted. I started talking about and I didn’t realise that I was talking more and more passionate about all the nice things I had seen and learnt. A second friend participated and both together encouraged me to talk.
New train stuff coming in the mail!
I just found out today that I am getting almost all of my "GG-Pa"s train stuff. He died last year, but he was a really cool great-grandpa, he even had great-great grandkids that knew him. My mom said that her cousin was at her Aunt's house when they were moving and saw all of the boxes of his old stuff and it was going to go to the Goodwill and she started crying. So she took it all home.
Building the layout room
After a couple of years I have finally built into my spare room for the Lipakovo line, a Russian TTe narrow gauge logging line. Discussion about the track plan is HERE.
The first TOMA competition was the impetus for actually building a layout rather than just thinking about it, and the modules I have designed are very lightweight (the subject of another blog post to come...)
The main requirements for building into the room were:
Grist Mill Diorama build Right On Track Models
While moving I took time to challenge myself with a midweek build.
Please note this build shares how I did it. With a friendly opinion of the kit.
The use of Steel Wool and vinegar stain is something to experiment with.
The fresh stain is very active and will go darker than the older stain I am using.
In fact, I am using the same stain made in the 2014 video.

Adding the second Siskiyou Line 2 module -- KC here we come!
Progress continues on the two modular sections of Siskiyou Line 2 that I plan to have on display in the MRH booth at the Kansas City NMRA National convention Train Show Aug 10-12.
Here is the track plan of what we will have on display:
Progress on the modules in the next post below.
Shopping trip turned into a train fiesta of a day
Yesterday my wife suggested we go on a little road trip to Edmundston, NB. She wanted to shop and to entice me suggested a stop in New Denmark, NB to see the Salmon River Trestle. That is a CN high steel trestle that is spectacular. We had seen it years ago. I decided to do a google search to see what else might be in the area and tripped on to Du Real Au Miniature. From Real to Miniature, a railroad interpretation centre. The highlight, for me, was the 900 square foot layout in Guy's basement. I've posted the story with pics.
