Kids and Trains

First. I don't believe for one millisecond that our hobby is dying. Second, I don't believe that attracting kids to our hobby will ensure its future health. However, since many think that it is important to get kids into trains at an early age (and who would say that's a bad thing) I want to tell what happened last night.

What's neat this week podcast #35

I had the opportunity to participate on the WTNW show this week. I want to thank Ken, Danil Mike and Dirk for having me on.

Trainz 2009 FREE when you sign up for the email newsletter.

I’m not linked to these guys in any way but got the email saying you can get the game for free! Their email newsletters are actually pretty interesting and even though the game is sorta old it is still a good one.

My current favorite podcast

We often get podcasts jump in and out of the hobby. Like the original Scotty Mason show I loved it, I still listen to it regularly as I have archived all the casts.

Recently I connected with these guys and have been listening ever since. It is a great podcast about modeling, not modeling plans, or fancy stories. Real modeling with thoughts on techniques and participating in the hobby they love.

VAL-U Fuels & Oil | Showcase miniatures HO Scale

I just received this kit.

Now after years of making unboxing videos and never releasing them, I am finally releasing my first. Now I do not have an affiliation with Showcase, I am friends with the co-designer of this kit Jason Jenson. This guy is set to become the next Selios. And I am prepared to fight for that opinion.

O Scale CCK Water Street Appliance [Review Build]

These are live videos and do contain how-to information. In fact, you'll find info in my videos that you will find nowhere else. However, these are not edited fancy videos that focus on video editing. I am a modeler, I share the modeling.

In this video, we substitute I&A stain for Steel wool and vinegar stain. Texture the wood and paint the walls an initial coat of off-white. Next video we will address windows and more wall detailing.

I made it into model railroader magazine

Or at least the background of a small photo :)

Or at least in the very background I see me and my road father in the rope right corner barely visible

DPM Scale frustration -- Gibbard Furniture

Been working on landscaping and structures of late. One thing I really wanted to have was a representation for the Gibbard furniture factory in Napanee -- on the riverside within sight of the viaduct. Had caged some DPM modules similar to the actual shapes and finally started building. Did not have enough to complete the structure so assembled a wall section and made castings using Smoothcast. So far so good. Not paying any attention, I worked on this whole business for a few weeks before comparing my structure to the other Walthers items in this little streetscape. Not good...

I’ve got boats to build

The planned southern terminus of my layout is Toledo, OH, a plausible place for me to be able to place a lake freighter. However, HO scale lake boats are not very easy to come by and tend to be expensive. Enter Scalescenes.com, a UK paper model site with digital downloads, much like Clever Model here in the US. Last year, they released a OO modern cargo ship which caught my eye, as it is somewhat close to a lake boat in appearance: long and narrow. Before I go making alterations, I figured I should do a “dry run,” building the ship to spec.
