Toying with O scale

There was a year about 10 years ago that I was regularly attending the train show at Timonium MD and a fellow came in selling his fathers HUGH collection of O scale cars, ..no engines, just cars.

Even though I am an HO guy, I decided to buy some with the idea of taking them to my retirement in Thailand. I spoke of this back over on this subject thread.

Any Marklin fans out there?

I have spent years playing around with US Outline HO and N Scale. If anyone remembers. I finished my Open University degree with a project for the routing of freight cars using a mobile phone app.

Inventory Software

I am on a cleaning/organizing kick. I just found a copy of Visual Train Caboodle from Alpine Software. Their website is very outdated but I am wondering if anyone has used this software and what their thoughts are. I have experience building databases, but would rather not reinvent the wheel. I also have played with Easy Model Railroad Inventory which is also out of production but still available via friend and all around good person Bill Brillinger... Thoughts and opinions?

Port of Green Bay Railroad - Andy is at it again!

Here we go again!  Lumber is on hand for the start of construction on my fourth iteration of my proto-freelanced Port of Green Bay Railroad.  I went back to basics to plan for my new 29'x11' finished layout room, starting with the Version 2 plan that I really enjoyed (Version 3 was too big!).  Take a look at the attached plan...and some photos of that layout in action.

Ideas on dealing with dust on the layout.

Yesterday when Michael Rose and his bride were at our home to enjoy a smoked Boston butt roast he wanted to peak in on my layout.  He noticed the dust as did I when I was taking roof top photos for another thread. Michael suggested asking you guys how you deal with dust. My layout room is inside of the house and I have a HEPA fan / filter running all of the time; however, I still get dust.

Finally starting the DCC ++ adventure

For the longest time I've used  commercial DCC systems, specifically Digitrax. I might still be using them today had they not drawn my ire by refusing to sell me a rubber keypad membrane that I figure probably cost no more than a quarter but that's water under the bridge now. I was at a point on my pike where I wasn't running many trains and I have a little homebrew DC throttle for testing anyway so I sold my Zephyr and moved on.

Assembly of a Great Northern Historical Society resin weed sprayer car kit

I am hoping to document the build of a Great Northern Historical Society resin kit for a weed sprayer.

Wide Shot

I posted this in response to a comment I had last night, and it really shows the extent of the scenery at this point. All of the track work is down and the railroad is operational. It took me about three years to get there, and was pure work - wiring, track laying and all is not my favorite. The track is Micro Engineering code 83 ande I hand built the turnouts. The bench work is 3/4" x 2.5" tall plywood grid on 12" x 12" centers with 1" construction foam over and 2" construction foam risers for the roadbed. Whew! Glad that's done!

Heading to Trainfest from Vermont.

Tuesday morning November 5, 2019.

Bags are packed so the hurry up has turned to wait.  Amtrack’s Vermonter will transport me to Philadelphia where I will spend the night.
