Been away a little while

My last post was sometime back in July I believe. We kind of had a rough summer what with everything going on in the world and my wife had to have some unexpected but major neck surgery so that's been a struggle for her and put an extra onus on me as far as running the family, taking care of her and such. We've been fortunate to have my 31 year old autistic  son here living with us though because he's helped me a lot with taking care of his mom.  You can find blessings in the strangest circumstances sometimes.

HO “Bedside & Hinged” Switching Layout

I found the MRH site accidentally a few days ago while searching for Track Plans for a very small HO switching layout that I've decided to build while away from home working. Kind of cool that a Google Search got me here via a picture of a track plan on Pinterest! I have a tiny room/office at my away place in Vancouver where I stay with a family. I'm hoping by documenting this, it might inspire other space challenged modelers to get building.

Update: Less is More WIP

The track into the downtown area on my layout, the Trenton Subdivision in N Scale is laid and ballasted. I removed several sidings to give the area a simpler, less cluttered look. More below.

That point where maybe a few of you have been

Well I have a feeling I am not the first one to come to this fork in the hobby road, but here is my commentary on where I am.

First thing that comes to mind when thinking of a hobby is something that brings a sense of joy or even reward. And when I say reward maybe I mean satisfaction to ones self for efforts they made in the hobby.

I am at a point where I do not know if I am capturing that, and I find myself at a place where my direction is unclear and I feel more guilt the joy from the hobby.

The Mud Bay & Western #8 - A Name Change!

Been a while since my last post. I have been settling into my new job and dealing with the whole covid lockdown thing. While the lockdown has impacted a lot of things, the good news is that the layout is progressing.

Before I get to the layout, there is one change I want to talk about first. The MB&W is undergoing a name change and from now on will be called the Fidalgo Island Rail and Sea Transportation Company.

Christmas Decorations for Lamp Posts

It is almost December so time to put up some Christmas decorations on my HO layout. This past year I got the last of the lamp posts up. So many towns and communities decorate their posts so why not do it in HO.

The process is simple, just need some time.
Tools used include a hot wire cutter, knife, cutters.
You need some extruded foam, couple of washers, craft paints, glue, fine turf, “dots” for decorations, thin wire.

Less is More! WIP.

Weekend WIP! Tearing up the tracks to the downtown area on my layout, Trenton Subdivisionin N scale. The area was too crowded, removing some of the sidings, opening up some space and adding additional feeder wires. Less is more!

SMA37 Simple DCC Connections for Wide Decoder Adaptation

This article describes a small, simple interface to convert DCC signals allowing a wide variety of Arduinos, PICS, Raspberry Pi’s or other processors, to utilize a native DCC signal straight from your layout bus. With this you can build DCC decoders with the likes of an Arduino Mega2650 which has 67 input/output pins available for decoder use, or try using a Teensy 4.0 with 600MHz clock speeds.

The Bear Creek and Eagle River

I did it, I'm taking the plunge and finally starting my first layout! (Well technically I bought the lumber this past week, but who's counting lol)

I will be chronicling my progress here, as much for my own ability to look back and see what I could improve on or to repeat something that I did as anything else.

It will be a simple 8'×18" switching layout built as two 4' modules. I chose this design because I live in an apartment and I know that I will be moving at least once. This way they will be easily movable when the time comes.

Introduction

Hi, my name is Richard, and I'm a Model Railroader.

<"Hi Richard">

Figured since I'd been lurking around for years and occasionally posting off the wall questions, and since I'm actually getting much closer to building a layout, it might be time to introduce myself.
